Which special units use the PKM?
At least one does...but which one, and exactly why they use it, I don't know. I suspect it could easily be the Green Berets 1st SF, who are undertaking a large number of training courses for foreign armies, a large number of whom use the PKM and PK in large quantities (either dismounted as a squad auto, or as truck/jeep armament). On such training classes, I'll bet they don't have time to muck about with some horribly maintained, totally worn out PKM, they need to get the troops to see what it SHOULD look like in good shape. They would also want to spend more time actually getting hits on target, than doing failure drills every moment the range is live! Besides, the SF guys would want their units to be dependable in case they get bumped while doing the training or in transit.
Second, they likely need to occasionally "blend in" with local forces...PKM's are highly visible infantry weapons, distinctive, and won't be mistaken for typical Western or American kit.
What I do know is that Vltor in America has been making brand new receivers for PKM's, and using brand new kits from...not sure, could be Poland? Anyway, high quality former Commie parts, with a few Made in USA parts, and a Picatinni rail mounted on the feed cover (normal place for red dots). They said they were for a special unit, small contract, but I think they may have had additional contracts since then.
I also know that the PKM is very highly regarded among many Western special ops people, I think mainly due to the light weight and very high reliability. I also know that quite a large number of PMC's seemed to have PKM's on their vehicles. Or at least many used to anyway.
