Can you SKS experts chime in with information on refurb laminate stocks.
We all know that if you have a pre-1955 SKS with a laminate stock, that it is a refurb. I wanted to know the origin of the stocks. I have a 1952 and 1954 SKS that are all-original except for the stocks. I suppose they were replaced some time during the refurb process. Did it happen at the Tula factory, or at the local arsenal?
I noticed that the laminate on my two Tulas are different. The 1952 seems to have a newer production stock, with no ###XX's, just the serial number stamped on it. It is also lighter in colour and has the original finish. The 1954 seems to have a 1950's laminate stock with an earlier serial number ###XX'ed out, and the new serial number stamped below it. The original finish was covered over by a hideous coat of shellac.
Two different stocks would indicate two different origins.
Any information would be helpful.
Thanks,
John
