Russian Simonov SKS

Hello all,

I have recently purchased a Russian Simonov SKS... now my questions are such:

1. Is there any way of removing the bayonet without permanent damage to the rifle?

2. Once removed can the bayonet be re-attached?

3. If I were to take this rifle hunting, are there any legalities concerning having the "bladed weapon" attached to the rifle?

4. I have heard of slam fires occuring, how can I prevent this?

5. Wil soft point bullets cycle in this rifle? I had an SVT 40 and it would never cycle the 7.62X54R rounds properly because of the soft tip, they would catch on the reciver ring and the bolt would almost smack the primer... accident waiting to happen. Want to avoid this with this SKS

1. The bayo can easily be taken off by taking out the screw at the base of the bayo. Keep in mind its spring loaded and if your not careful you could send it flying across the room.( Don't ask how I know this)

2. Yes it can be re-attached with no problem.


3. Am not 100% sure, but I have never read or heard that having the bayo attatched while hunting would be illegal. I am sure someone will key in on this point.

4. Keep the bolt and firing pin very clean and dry, and you will not have any slam fires. The firing pin should move freely when you shake the bolt body, unless you have an older model like a 1950, then your firing pin may be spring loaded.

5. I cannot speak for everyone, but my Rusky cycles just fine using soft tips.

That's odd with the SVT 40 I have one and it seems to feed soft points, might be a magazine issue. The bayonet can be taken on and off with a simple flathead screwdriver and shouldn't damage it at all. As far as I know hunting with it on is legal you just have to use softpoints. I've fired Privi Partisan SP's and a couple other types and it hasn't jammed. I've never had a slamfire either and I've deliberately tried to push this rifle to the limit. I have yet to break it.
