Is it possible to have a full five rounds in the magazine and then load one in the chamber like can be done with detachable magazine firearms, thus giving a total capacity of 6?

Slide 5 off the stripper clip into the mag, take an extra one put it in the chamber, push down on the loaded mag and ride the bolt until it clears the rim of the first round that is in the mag and then just let the bolt go.

IMHO that is.

It works better when you load five into the mag and then open the mag's floorplate a little. Put the single round in the chamber and then close the bolt. I prefer this method as it does not put my valuable fingers into the ravenous jaws of the feed lips or bolt.

You should do a timing test. Count how many seconds/minutes it takes to fanagle that extra round into the chamber to get six rounds, and how many seconds it takes to slam home five rounds from a stripper clip. Include a round of firing in the equation too.

I bet you that it's faster to load five, shoot, and load five more than load five, fight to get that extra round in the chamber, fire, and repeat.

I know what you guys are saying, I was just thinking of using it at the very begining of a firing session, not for on the go reloads. I mostly was just curious as to if it could be done with the integral mag.

Don't worry, I know the drill. I've been reading the stickies, I have it all torn apart and ready for de-greasing tomorrow and I opened and re-stacked my crate of surplus. I'm trying to figure out what year I have and to what degree its been refurbed. I'm pretty sure it a 1950, but it has a near perfect laminate stock. Only thing that appears to be forced matched is the gas tube.

push firmly.... most will take a 6th round into the mouth of the mag but not allow it down far enough to close the bolt over top. Try it.... Might suprise you

Gas tubes were not force matched. You can not stamp the metal with a punch because it is too thin and you will damage the gas tube. Even on the unfired, non refurbs, collectors, the tube has been electro penciled.
