Hey guys, I'm curious about the barrel markings on my SKS. I never really thought much of it until I notice my buddy's has the same markings, both rifles were purchased at roughly the same time but through different vendors. I can't find any information on it anywhere, I'm guessing it's just a replacement barrel of some sort. Since a picture is worth a thousand words here's one of it

Any ideas? I don't think that in 1954 they'd put "Made in Russia" on their barrels

It's the markings for the latest batch of SKS to come in from Russia. Molot is the Russian maker/refurber/distributer. It's their export marking if you will. That's my understanding anyway.

These are markings that create a work around Russian export laws stating that Surplus military rifles cannot be exported. This mark in effect makes it a "Sporting Rifle" that then could be exported from Russia.

Interesting, I’ve never seen those markings before. I bought my SKS from Westrifle at the beginning of the year and it has “normal’ markings. It’s nicely blued.
I also noticed that that SKS in the picture is not blued but covered with some black “asphalt” paint! Looks awkward!
Who is selling those Molot exported SKS’s by the way?

Westrifle's aren't from Russia, hence why no molot markings. Ukraine and Polish imports are cleaner.

ОП-СКС stands for Russian Okhotnichye-Promyslovyy SKS, or "Hunting SKS".
As said above, classifying SKSs like this makes them possible to be sold abroad.
The 1st round mark is the logo of the Molot factory see their website http://molot.biz/
The logo has letters ВП for Vyatskiye Polyany, the place where the factory is located.
The 2nd logo has letters ГИС or GIS which stands for Gosudarstvennaya Ispytatelnaya Stantsiya, or National Testing Station, located at Tochmash factory (these even have an English website: http://www.tsniitochmash.ru/en/
All of these logos have nothing to do with original factories which produced the rifles.

Cool, thanks for all the information! I had a hunch it could also be import markings but I thought that wasn't common place for Canadian market rifles. Learned something new!

At least Molot puts their export markings under the gas tube. The Americans require import markings on all surplus (unless it was originally US property) AND said markings must be visible or receiver.

Molot rifles usually also have "ГИС" mark on receiver. "ГИС" stamp basically means that surplus rifle was inspected/tested at government facility, met all requirements and is safe to handle.
