(POST MOVED TO RED RIFLES)


this is my very first post so i hope ive got the correct section. As of today i am officially a first time gun owner and decided to start with a 1952 sks because ive herd good things and the price was for sure rite.
i got the gun home and took it out of the box looked great other than the Cosmoline witch really wasn't to bad to remove. my problem was they must have missed a spot on the under section where the gas tube is because in a small maybe about a 1cm long section there was a build up of corrosion and rust (on the outside of the tube) i removed it with some sandpaper as best i could and it revealed some shallow pitting. my question is is this going to be a safety issue? is there any chance of it breaking or cracking? should it be replaced?

Hey Motorhead,

Welcome to CGN! To address your first question, there is a specific forum for SKS. In the main forum index, scroll down about half way, and there is a section for "Red Rifles". Tons of SKS material in there.

Secondly, if you could post a pic of the pitting, that would be very helpful. I've seen some of these rifles with a little bit of pitting and they still work fine, but obviously we don't want anything to break and be potentially dangerous.

Some pitting is to be expected, given the age of these rifles. That said, a pic would be very handy here.

here are some pics hopefully they will be good enough (taken on phone). As you can see after i sanded i gave it a thin coat of krylon paint just to help stop it from rusting more.

Sorry for the delay... I usually cruise CGN at work, and most of the pics are blocked... laaame!

Looks reasonable. Seal it, keep an eye on it. If it gets worse, there are plenty of aftermarket options out there.

And of course, now that I think about it, most of that pitting looks like its a little further back on the tube, and it's a little bit thicker there. Should be okay, but keep an eye on it for sure!
