Russian SKS mag in Chicom rifle

It's pretty damn tight occasionally. I've fitted a Chinese mag into a Yugoslavian M59/66 before, and I had to apply some ungodly pressure to get it to fit. I'd say keep going at it until you're afraid you may crack the stock, then stop. As for actual hand-fitting, I couldn't advise you there one way or the other.
