Hey guys

I have a russian SKS that has a pretty nice red stock, has the star stamp and all the same numbers stamped on all the parts. I paid 240 for it from frontier firearms I believe last year. I love the gun, it shoots great!

Anyway, there is a crack at the bottom of the groove cut into the stock where the bayonet sits. The gun feels kind of sloppy because of this, the action and magazine kind of slop around in the stock. I was wanting to keep everything original but now I think I might have to get an aftermarket stock.

If you were in this situation, would you try to find another Russian SKS stock, or buy a synthetic bubba stock? What solution would make it less valuable?

I'm not a collector perfectionist type, I just like to play around with my SKS's and hunt with my bolt action tikka...I don't want to wreck the value but if its never gonna be worth much, what do I have to lose?

A russian wood stock would be the best way to preserve its value. plastic is cheap and easy to replace. theres sometimes nice take-off stocks on the EE if you want an authentic replacement, or if you want to dabble with the aftermarket stuff you could always keep your original in a safe location while the rifle wears a synthetic stock. Yet another option would be to repair the stock. Fiberglass and epoxy would be good choices so long as you do a good clean repair. Its too bad your matching-numbers stock cracked on you. If it were me, I would repair the crack with a little epoxy.
