I can pick up an SKS locally - well, almost - for $299, with a mag butchered by Bell. Should I? Or should I just hold off until Moving Target gets more nice ones?

This is going to be a shooter, so I'm not even hoping for an un-issued one. Please forgive me for saying this, but I'm also planning to mutilate (nah, just to remove) the wooden stock and put on Tapco.

TIA.

Yup, we are fortunate on the west coast that Leverarms is selling at 199.50 and on each of my recent trips there, they have from 60 to a hundred on display at any one time. Heard they have thousands more in the pipeline!

However, one needs to pick and choose his rifle because the condition of the SKSs available ranges from bad to almost pristine. And yes, they are all supposed to be arsenal refurbed. And yes, I've got 3 pretty examples (51, 52and 55) with no arsenal refurb stamp marks (square or diamond with slash on the cover) plus a beautiful 56 with refurb diamond.

Required a few trips to the store and lots of patience....guys who have been to Leverarms for their SKSs should know the drill. With the demand for SKS rifles, the limited sales staff is overworked. They allow each customer to see only three rifles before he decides which one to buy....standard policy on SKS rifles.

But all the effort paid off handsomely in the end. My buddy and I have shot a couple of ours and are extremely pleased with our 3-4 inch 100 yd groups and total reliability so far.

Long gone are the days when you could walk into Lever Arms and fondle the milsurps at will. The only things that used to be locked up were the handguns. Rows and rows of Martinis, Mausers,Lee Enfields of different marks, Springfields and Garands, not to forget the Krags and Remington Rolling Blocks as well as the Trap Doors and Stens, just to mention a few. There were also bins of antique chandlery from old ships and bins of military accessories, anything from web gear to telephones. There were also stacks and pallets of ammunition on the floor. The walls and ceilings were literally covered with museum quality maritime memorabilia. Those were the days that you could purchase a rifle and a crate of ammunition from Allan Lever on Dunsmuir Street, walk out the door for a block or two until you got to your vehicle or jumped on a bus and no one batted an eyelash. One time a bus driver told me I had to sit right behind him so I wouldn't trip anyone with all of the stuff I was carrying, Two rifles a sword and two bayonets with a black "spam can" of milsurp 303 Brit. He couldn't have cared less about what I had. I guess he'd seen it all before. Damn, I really miss thos days of reality and freedom. That's about the same time the politically correct revolution started and we started to give away our rights to a Pe--erhead named Trudeau, may he rot in hell. Sorry for the hijack, I hope some of the history of Lever Arms will be of interest to some.

I think 299$ for bell import is too much. I was lucky to find a 1954 izvesk for 220$ tax incl. few months ago, but has the ugly black paint. Cabela's called me monday to tell me they finally got my order. I had to cancel since i already got 4 all picked up personnaly. YOu can find a cheaper non black painted for even less if you search a little more... .
