shooting my Russian SKS, surplus ammo, gun shoots good for the first 3 or 4 shots then starts the shoot like 2-3 inches left at 50 yards....

this is with bayonet folded.

shoud i try pulling the stock?

what causes this?

Make sure, your surplus ammo is not from poland...or else you'll have all kinds of surpises.
2 of my SKS shoot better groups when hot,5 don't show any difference (got 12 :D )
Anyway, the stock or the gas tube...something is too tight in the front (and even if the original SKS manual states "bajonet open" for sighting in , I haven't found much difference- so drop the bajo as cause)
If you can take out your gas tube after 5 quick rounds without a pry bar,the stock is the problem. Also make sure, the front metal cover where the stock feeds into is 90 degrees and not bent to one side or the other.

How long are you waiting in between shooting your groups?

All I can suggest (the rifle being an SKS and all lol) is that it might be a change in accuracy from the barrel being shot cold and warming as you fire your group.

Are you 100% sure that it shoots well with the first couple shots of the group? Or is it the first couple shots that are out and then the rest come on target?

A good way to test if it's a cold/warming barrel issue is to shoot 5 rounds at a seperate target, then load 5 quick with a stripper clip and shoot your true 5round group at your paper target.

See if this fixes the wandering group and at least you will be able to rule out the rifle or not.

Thanks for the tips, ill try shooting it warm, and if that doesnt work ill see if the piston is tight as coachgun67 said, if not then it must be the stock.

now that i think about it i think it may have been shooting best once it was warm, not best cold like i said in the first post. better try it again.

how is your stock fit?

if you grab the grip with your right hand and barrel with your left, then pull and push "does the reciever shift around alot in the stock?"

Aye. Try it and see what happens.

Even then, it's not necessarily the stock or the gas tube either with an SKS.

Could simply be the bore is not in very good condition and the rifling is soft and rounded, crown could be damaged etc

I shoot a lot of surplus rifles and I have always noticed this same problem when shooting groups and walking to check out the target/patch etc the barrel will go 100% cold again and my first shot or two will be away from the tight 3 shot group.

Sometimes though, the bore of the milsurps rifles days of sharp shooting are done and gone lol

The best way to omit the cold bore issue though is to shoot 5 rounds fast and get her warmed up then shoot a nice calm 5 round group on target and see how she does.

^This happened to me a while back - was thinking things were not quite right and the stock must have dried out or something - took up the space with gasket paper, brass shims, etc. Also remove the bayonet, it seems to make a bit of a difference.
