Guess?
Some may say I am comparing apples and oranges, but if you had to choose, based on budget, shootability, ammo availability and collectability etc, which would you buy?

I will eventually own both...once the safe grows larger :D, but which would you buy first? One factor aiding the SKS is the cost and availability of ammo (just got a case of 7.62x39 from CanadaAmmo).

SKS hands down. Cheap to feed, light recoil, nice size for packing around the bush and easy to clean. Plus for the 429+tax and shipping that an SVT40 cost you can get a russky SKS and 1120 rounds of ammo and still be ahead of the SVT40 price.

The SVT40 would be a good later addition as ammo becomes available. I got a few SKS rifles and would like to add an SVT40 to the mix as I have ~1200 rounds of steel cased 7.62x54R surplus ammo...

budget - SKS
shootability - SKS
ammo availablility -SKs
collectablility - SVT for the simple reason that it was WWII issue.

2x , also this sks45 shipment may be the last one we be able to buy it so cheap ( $170) .

SKS hands down .... I'd buy an SVT eventually, but the supply of 54R ammo is hit and miss these days, and although I've never fired one, let alone taken one appart, the SVT looks to be MUCH more of a PITA than the SKS to take appart and clean.

Do you use the SKS as a "Bush gun" or do you hunt with it?

I use it as a bush gun where the shots are a max of 50 yards, and usually in my case 30yrds. There are guys who hunt with it out to 100yrs, but I prefere my bolt action rifle for longer shots. But for close range, especially when your doing a deer drive, the SKS is nice and fast and more than capable of doing the job.

Economically speaking, the SVT should be bought later. There is currently very small amounts of 7.62x54R in the country, but MUCH more is on the way at very reasonable prices.

Don't wait for the shipment to come in. Just shoot an SKS until it does, THEN buy the SVT. :)

This is definitly a get one of the next run of ruskie SKS's that everyone is so excited about then an SVT as well. Even though there is very little 7.62/54 in Canada there is lots workldwide and I know for a while there it was cheaper on the world market than the 7.62/39 due to all the AK ammo needed for the Iraq war.

Ya, I jumped on that bandwagon pretty quick. :) I think I am 149 on the list.
