For those who are interested in learning hand to hand combat in Vancouver, I would like to introduce you to " Systema Vancouver "

Systema focuses on a few main concepts. One is fear, another is movement, another is breathing, and finally there is work with contact. It’s through these concepts that we can learn more about how to react appropriately to what is happening in our surroundings. Working within one’s safety is another key concept. Systema teaches us about survival. By constantly keeping a safe distance (which is always changing) you begin to develop attacking skills from this state. Then you can really begin to feel the work coming to you naturally; which makes it also a demanding work-out. Now you are not pushing your body with your mind, but trying to keep up to your mind, with your body.

The contact work will always teach us about the deeper aspects of ourselves. Sometimes the slightest contact with another person is enough to make us feel uneasy or irritated – these are the responses that we want to understand and be aware of… Almost always in the training context, we will work from a point of contact. This helps us to be realistic and safe at the same time. A very important part of the contact work is the Systema Massage, which will be incorporated into each class session. Breathing is how we create better efficiency with our movement and structure, but it is also the key psychological ingredient to Systema training. Without the breath-work it is not truly Systema… By breathing through each movement, we connect our minds and bodies with a deep element of sensation, concentration, and relaxation. When we practice holding our breath, it will teach us about the sensation of “panic” and “fear.” And finally we practice recovering from feelings of fear and panic through breathing – learning how to recover your emotions relates directly to your well-being in a time of crisis (riots, earthquakes, fire, combat, car accidents).

No matter who you are, there is something to learn from Systema. It is designed to help you learn more about yourself, and the people around you.

Here is a video from my friend in Taiwan who also teaches Systema

Here is a bit personal story I have with Systema Vancouver's chief instructor Cristian. 10 years ago we did our Basic Military Qualification ( Army Reserve ) course together as section mate. We both shared lots interests in martial art. 10 years later I am able to help him out by hosting his Systema class here in my Dojo. Cristian is a truly outstanding guy and instructor.
