Left my O/U underneath the bed for a couple months while out of town and came home to it covered in rust. I suspect one of the pets either decided to piss on it or perhaps enjoyed the taste of metal. Either way it was once blued and its now spotted with orange and the bad spots are quite rough. I wore through cloths trying to scrub it off with WD40 and Hoppes and got it best I could for now. Question is, what are my options. Would having it re-blued work? Would a good smith have some miracle solvent that would clean it up nicer? Is there something additional I could do to it myself? Or do I just suck it up and shoot it as is. Thanks for your help.

OOOO steel wool, gun oil and and lots of elbow grease.
If after that you still have issues, it's pretty well have to live with what you got or reblue.

Well after you are done getting the rust off with the steel wool trick and you see bare metal you are going to have to keep it lightly oiled. Or rust could start to form again depending on how you like the appearance I would have it re-blued if the value of the gun is worth it.

I have always did the steel wool attack also until a few years back a Harley friend gave me some of this stuff he uses on his bike to try. Unreal
If the rust is real heavy you may have to give it a steel wool treatment first but I haven't had any since a few applications of this would not cure.
Here is the kicker if you use the other steel wool method and figure it is now rust free put this on and use a white cloth to clean it off and it will blow you away what ruct the steel wool leaves behind. What I also like about the paste it doesn't seem to remove any bluing and actually makes what is there shine like new. Worth a try.
