Rust inside a barrel

So I picked up a second barrel for my 840. I only gave it a once over at the gun shop but when I got it home, it turns out it's got some rust inside. I hear that's usually a bad thing.

Anyway, is there anything I can do you permanently keep it at bay? Or am I doom to a life of the wire brush and lieberal amounts of oil on a regular basis?

Bear in mind that it cost me $40, it's been cut down to 18(and a bit)inches (it's kinda a truck/4-wheeler gun) and I'm not gonna be putting any serious money into this. If worse comes to worse, I'll just pick up another one.

My H&R single shot I just got was really rusty inside. I put the bore brush on its rod and then hooked it up to my power drill and ran it through the barrel for a minute.

Looks really good now and rust is staying away.

rusty barrel

I've used Evapo-rust (from Lee Valley Tools) on a rusty bore before, and it worked wonders. That stuff just dissolved the rust and left the steel, which was a lot faster than scrubbing with an oily brush until my arm dislocates. As far as keeping the rust away after cleaning it out, then an occasional visit with an oily patch wouldn't hurt. My 2 cents.

Erik.

Get some valve grinding compound from Ukranian Tire or auto shop and get either a hardwood dowel and saw a slit in one end an inch deep for wedging in a piece of rag and put it in a drill and polish away. You can also use a metal rod but woods cheaper...........Harold
