Rusted CZ858 Barrel, Need Feedback

Hey Guys,

I went to a co-workers house to pick up a pistol I bought and he was showing me his collection of guns. Out come the shotties and the rifles, then he whips out the CZ and all of a sudden it looks like someone punched his little brother. The barrel was completely rusted. He shot it 6 months ago and put it away, forgetting to clean the corrosive residue that was left over. The barrel was really bad with deep rust from end to end.

As you can imagine he is heartbroken and I would like to suggest alternatives to him because he was very upset. I am wondering, do you guys know of a dealer/individual who is selling replacement barrels?

Also, I was considering suggesting that he get a VZ58 barrel instead. I understand there is confusion about shortening your barrel but is it alright to buy a manufactured barrel that would change the class of your rifle from unrestricted to restricted?

Let me know what you guys think about this one.

I think your friend has a problem: the VZ's barrels are press-fitted and it takes a very good machinist and gunsmith to exchange them.
Maybe selling the firearm for parts and buying a new one with the chromed barrel?
PP.

Before he does anything else, tell him to clean the rifle. I have found some quite badly rusted barrels actually come out OK. Remember, if he didn't clean it the barrel is also coated in copper, that little bit of copper actually tends to protect the bore. The bullet goes down the bore before the powder, or rather the primer residue does so with any luck he might be OK. I have old "Barn" guns that look horrible on the out side and inside but after sitting down and cleaning the barrel, it was quite usable. I believe the barrel was protected because it was not ever cleaned and the copper fouling actually protected the bore!

I made the same mistake with an old sks, but only left it for a week. I bought a tornado brush and brushed the bore to get rid of the rust. After that I brushed it with a regular brush and then a good cleaning, worked for me but that was an old norinco sks. I did buy the brush for the 303 British not a .308.
Found it a little tighter and polished the barrel a little more. Hope that this helps. Might help save his piece. Good Luck

I screwed up with a #5 jungle carbine and some blackpowder blanks. I can tell you I know the feeling to look down that barrel, I cleaned and scrubbed and it turned out okay, I still shot some excellent groups out of that rifle and hunted with it for years.
If anything it taught me a good lesson on corrosive ammo and cleaning.

I have "the" solution...

Dlask knows VZ/CZ's.
Dlask can remove the barrel and install a new barrel (from scratch), but the customer must provide the barrel blank.

It just so happens that I have a 28" Montana Rifle Barrel Blank in Stainless Steel (no more worry about corrosive ammo) specifically for this purpose (It was going to be my next project). See my Avatar.

However, I'm putting that project on hold, so I'm selling the 28" blank... the only bad part about all this is you will end up spending almost as much as a new rifle when all is said and done (not quite though). But, you're friend will have a sweet, customized rifle with a stainless, high quality barrel :)

PM sent.

I just put a new barrel on my Vz, easier than changing Ak barrels by far.
You basically need a heavy and rigid H-press headspace gages and a little fixturing.
Dlask should be able to fix you right up.

clean it first! even if there is some pitting take it to the range and shoot a few groups...
i have seen more then a few rifles with "questionable" bores still shoot very decent groups... i even had a cooey .22 that was so rusted i had to re-open the bore with a drill bit and cleaned it with a stainless steel pistol brush chucked in a cordless drill, the last 4" of the barrel where allmost smooth and the gun would still shoot 1.5" groups with dynapoint at 50M... plenty useable for its purpose.

Where did you get the barrel and how much did the installation cost? I'm having a rough time finding replacement barrels. G37 gave me a helpful alternative but I want as many options as possible.

Also, I agree with the majority of you that say clean it well and check to see how it groups. My friend told me he would clean it as soon as I left. I am going to call him later today after I get feedback from everyone to tell him what his options are. So keep the alternatives/suggestions coming guys. I'm all eyes.

Also, I haven't read any opinions on putting a restricted barrel in if found. What do you guys know about that?

I had bought a bunch of parts kits when they were still $50. I changed the barrel myself but have alot of experience building Ak's and this is an easier gun to build.
If I build another one I am going to use a .308 blank and load match rounds for it.
