Hey I got a Browning .243 and i want to get some of the surface rust off what do you recommend for that and what lubricant would you recommend? I'v got a canadian tire close but SIR is a little farther north

Better yet is brass wool, available from yachting suppliers / chandlers. Steel wool sheds fine shreds of wire, which lodges in various nooks and crannies and then rusts. Brass wool saves you that problem, and is easier on the bluing as well.

If its pitted , and the rest of the gun is very nice a blasting job may be in order , followed by some sort of finish, blue , teflon or whatever...If just a junker , steel wool and a quality cold blue will work fine. Oxpho (not sure on the spelling here)

I de-rusted a No1Mk3 which was completely covered with surface rust with 000 steel-wool and cheap motor oil (the kind that sells at 1.25$ per litre at Cafrican Tire, bought that by error and there's no way I'm pouring that crap in my engine)

Cleaned the rust beyond all expectations.
 
0000 steel wool and oil will certainly work, but a fine brass wire wheel in a bench grinder is faster. A gentle touch and saftey glasses required.
 
99 cents for a brass brush at Princess Auto and any gun oil or WD-40 will take the surface rust off and not mess up the blueing on your gun.
 
I would say stay away from the WD40. It does have a slightly negative effect on blueing when used with 0000 wool; I'm guessing not enough lubricating power and the wool cuts too much. Oil for sure is safe. Just be patient, and gentle. Let the oil soak for a while.
 
If you are looking for some 0000 steel wool it is available in the paint section at Walmart. Have used this and gun oil a few times to clean some neglected guns. Works really well and doesn't remove the bluing but you need to use a light touch for sure.
