A while back I ordered a spare Chinese SKS gas piston from Marstar. When I unwrapped it recently, I noticed the entire piston was covered in a patina (as on the end). This was easily remedied by attaching the gas piston to my drill, and first using a course scouring pad, and then 00 steel wool, and finally 0000 steel wool I was able to achieve a new, shiney, silver finish -- in about 10 minutes. This gas piston was never used, but with age and a bit of moisture it became somewhat discoloured. An easy trick if you want your gas piston to shine again.
