I acquired a bunch of badly rusted rifles. I would like opinions on the best penatrating fluids and the best products for stopping rust. It is sad to see these guns actions frozen some so bad that the stocks have rotted. Want to take them apart to gain some knowledge of the actions etc. Thanks in advance.
 
Virtually any penetrating oil will do the trick- I happen to be using Release-all currently, but your FLAPS (friendly local auto parts store) will have plenty of options. WD40 is ok in a pinch, but is likely the worst penetrating oil. It is good however to dry out a mechanism as it coats parts and "floats" the water away- but it has to be removed as it dries and leaves a bit of varnish.
 
Soak them in a container of diesel fuel for a few days if they are that badly rusted up, that may help along with some heat and a hammer to tap things loose again. If they are that severe, screws & small parts may be destroyed by trying to get them loose.
 
I have been really liking Deep Creep lately, but fortunately I haven't needed to use it on any of my firearms... I'd try that pail o' diesel maybe....
 
The best penetrant/loosen-all, above all the Automotive store bought stuff is plain old drug store Iodine. Have used it for years on the farm to loosen bearings/gears/pullys that have been rusting onto machinery shafting for 40 yrs or more in some cases. Usualy pour a little on and walk away until the next day but have had success in as little as two hrs.

Yes, but like diesel from a gas station it has additives that cause it to stink like hell. Get one drop in the house and you'll have to work like blazes to get the smell out.

There's a couple of videos on You Tube about really badly rusted guns that have been brought back from the dead using electrolysis rust removal combined with other techniques. But first you need to get the guns apart. And that's where the good penetrating oils come in. But then wash them down with a degreaser before the rust removal solutions or using the electrolysis method or the penetrating oils will block the solutions from getting into the rust.

Should clean up nice, one the action is loosened up a bit..... :) I wonder if it's loaded?
