Rusty Redding powder measures

Should I get Redding to warranty these (new) powder measures?



Or should I just clean them up with G96/cotton swabs, de-grease then use them (and forget about the embedded rust)?

How new ? If it just came from the store like that I would take it back to the store for a refund. If you had it for any amount of time it could be your storage conditions. Minor surface rust will clean up with a little oil and steel wool. Make sure any oil is removed before using again. I have an old Lyman 55 from the 50’s with minor surface rust when I bought it. Cleaned up really well.

Just take a bit of fine steel wool and clean it up.

Won't hurt function one bit.

Thanks. I just de-greased with 99% rubbing alcohol and will reassemble.

Bought new from a dealer in the the US a 3-4 months back. It's pretty dry in my house due to AC (I like to keep it a frosty 19C). The units were probably not stored in the same dry environment prior to sale to me.

and then lube the drum with a little bit of graphite powder.

Several years ago, I ordered one direct from Redding which arrived in that same condition. For that much money, no way was I going to clean up any rust (on a brand new measure). I complained . . . they sent me a replacement.
