Rusty sks value?

I kinda like the pre 1953 SKS’s ....I think they where a little , better built...just my two cents. But $200.00 tops...$235.00 shipped to my door.
Cheers

I’ll go against the grain and say the OP was ripped off. The condition is unacceptable. I wouldn’t accept that rust heap if it was given to me.

Edit: I didn’t read the post where OP saId he returned it. Good. A neutral feedback is the best I’d give the seller.

That is old pitting. It was like that before it was sold off surplus. Just clean off the scabbing. Not much you can do about the pitting. If the bore is OK, it will be a decent shooter.
What do ho-hum SKS rifles sell for these days? I don't know that $260 in trade value is too far off; depends on what you traded.

I think the same, if the bore is good, make a good truck gun, in 5 yrs might be a bargain.
The best one I ever shot looked about like that. Get pictures, no pictures, no trade.
I just read the rest and see you sent it back, so you can disregard the rest

Whether it was valued appropriately or not doesn’t really matter in my opinion - this is not the gun you agreed to! And although I agree on the importance of always asking for pictures, I also believe it’s the sellers responsibility to disclose this type of thing, pictures or not! Negative review for sure, that was a poor transaction. My 2 cents.

Edit: I’d like to add that I’ve always thought CGN was a great community built on trust. Every time I buy something on the EE, I trust that the seller isn’t hiding anything and has been up front with me about the item. This type of transaction is sad to see but I’m glad to hear he took it back without raising a stink.

Yup...rifle has some old pitting from poor storage, and I am
quite happy to get it back. She shoots just fine btw and is sound otherwise...I'll clean her up a bit better and shoot her...its a "surplus" rifle...jeebus yas need to calm the hell down !!..really...

It’s not that $260 was a bad price, and who really cares about a bit of rust on a “shooter”. It’s just that the buyer obviously wasn’t made aware of the condition. “Minor pitting due to poor storage” in the ad or via pm would have prevented an unhappy exchange. :)

Actually there was no unhappy exchange at all,..realistically I should have looked closer at the rifle when I took it apart to ship, and I'll wear that np...it wasnt intentional.I am quite happy to get the rifle back...

Sorry not trying to get involved or stick my nose in something that’s none of my business. I just know I always appreciate full disclosure and so far I’ve had nothing but great experiences on the EE with items arriving as described. It’s always in the back of my mind though.

Well ,I don't think the buyer was happy, or we would not be talking about this.
But every thing turned out fine for both of you.
And I am not saying you where trying to pull a fast one, but maybe a better detail description would not have brought this on.

To tell you the truth buddy wasn't honest with you . he should have told you that it was very rusty . if he was going to give it to you for say $100 to $150 max maybe but not $260 . even nowadays . I'm glad you sent it back .

This transaction should be stickied somewhere as an example of how EE deals should NOT be done.

I’m not slamming Buyer or Seller. Every person is unique. Every person has their own set of quality standards. Every person has his own protocol.

I have probably racked up an average number of deals on the EE, with 100+ positive feedback. Some multiple deals with the same person. On many deals I did not give feedback. Nor have I been given feedback.

But everything deal I’ve done has ended happily with an item that was within my expectations, or the buyers’.

A couple times there have been issues with items and a quick exchange of PMs quickly resolved those.

But two items on my pre-purchase checklist that I never fail to tick off: Pictures and the other party's Feedback. Any doubts or questions about either, I clarify.

Less than 100% positive feedback does NOT mean a bad seller. Some buyers/sellers can be impossible to please. For sellers or buyers, with less than 100% positive. I cross check the history of the fellow who gave the negative to make sure he/she is not a total whiner. I know about these tough customers. I have been on the receiving end of unreasonable buyers on EBAY.

Recently received an sks from a fellow member valued at $260 in a trade. I asked about use and he said he only fired 30 rounds of non corrosive ammunition through it and it functioned well. I was picturing a good condition refurb, having seen a few in the past this one looks like it’s been neglected since it left cosmoline land. Please let me know what you think it’s value is. The sad thing is that he even removed the barrel from the stock so there’s no way he was unaware of this rust. Anyways.. Here’s the pictures.

Thanks!

Best part is seller 'only fired 30 rds of non corrosive ammo through it.'
Lol.

I look at the photos, I where the worst pitting is seems to be next to the wood. It also looks like a lot of the flaked rust was removed, likely during repair before it even ended up in Canada.

How short our memories are... a couple years ago when you could buy these anywhere for $200.00 or less, there were a lot of posts about how someone got a rusty/worn out/mismatch/BBQ paint/seized up (pick an issue) sks, usually from a big-box store. Btw, I was lucky and got a very nice one from Cabelas. They were pretty much luck of the draw, unless you paid to have one hand selected.

Considering where prices have gone recently, if it is a shooter, $260 is fair. The original post proverbially paid about $200.00 in that condition in the first place.

I think it is likely that the owner did only put 30 rounds through it; the rust is not where one might expect to see it from corrosive ammo.

When the Turdo banns it, if there is a buy-back, you will stand to make more money than someone who recently bought one for 400 off the EE.

Good points guys, thank you for your opinions. We sorted it out with each other and I think we are both happy now. To be honest I had no idea SKS’s were selling for $450 now.. I’m a little surprised but hey, the Turd Reich is good for sales and I hope all of the guns off the ban list double in price to make tax payers realize how big of a waste of money this is, since they might care about that.

I would NEVER buy a rusty SKS. After you spend $200 on ammo, then you realize you were stupid. Now you have rusty SKS minus $460. If you add those $200 toward purchase a better SKS, you could have matching ,not refurb, original bluing SKS in nice condition.

Some folks have only small amounts of money and work low paid, menial jobs.Parts are cheap and the bore is chrome lined so it will shoot fine with some rust. the buyer can buy a can of BBQ paint, some steel wool, and let it look like new again. That old rusty hulk might be a good shooter, and we shouldn't judge a cheap book by it's cover.............SKS's are not heirloom quality but we like them like that. The best examples still look like crap, but we sing Russian songs, and then shoot them until they smoke.
