Jerry Kuhnhausen wrote a shop manual many years ago. A lot of good practical info there. Should still be able to find a copy.
*edit, I missed the x frame part, don't know if the book would help too much.

Brownells should still have the Kuhnhausen books, and even if you're dealing with a model too recent to be included, his Smith & Wesson Revolvers volume is still a wealth of information about how S&W puts a revolver together and how to approach working on them.
