Hi

Has anyone had problems with their Hornady progressive primer drop system getting hung up using S&B LP primers?

I've been struggling all afternoon with adjustments but just can't make it work. Ran 100 WW LP primers and it works like a charm.

I have resigned to de-prime and expand and then use my hand priming tool to seat the primers. If I didn't need to use the S&B I wouldn't. However beggars can't be too choosy these days. :0)

My LNL press is almost 15 years old, and made at a time when Hornady was rushing to keep up with demand, and pushing some noticeably sketchy stuff out the door.

I've never tried S&B primers, but when I got it there were recurring problems with all the primers I initially tried. I had to go over the primer shuttles and radius all the sharp edges with fine sandpaper before it would work worth a hoot. The hole that picks up the primer was most critical, primers would tilt, flip, and grab regularly until the circumference of the hole was thoroughly rounded off, top and bottom. Then I switched out the plastic follower rod it came with for a brass one, to keep some serious weight on the last few primers out of the tube, and it has worked flawlessly ever since with all primer sizes.

Thank you so much.
That is a description that my press is following to a T.
It will work fine for 6 primer drops and then the primer delivery sleeve will stick back and I'm sure it is from primer interference.
I tried loosening the tower but same results. Back and forth on the extending rod had no effect.
Makes sense that it is rough edges. I have had this press since they updated the kickout to the shell plate and WW primers worked fine.
Now that primers are hard to get we can`t be so choosy.
Thank you for the advise.

I use my AP LNL press mostly for 45ACP. What I found is S&B primers in S&B brass fives me fits one in 10-20 will crush the primer or flip it sideways. For the record, I have de-burred the slide and have no issues with any other primer/case combos. Like you, I have a supply of S&B primers to use so I simply sort out the S&B cases and that solves the problem. Since I have to keep an eye out for SP brass anyway, this isn't really an extra step. Good luck.

Thanks.
Yep I through out all S&B brass too.

** Update**

I flipped the spring that returns the primer sleeve from down through to up through at the shell plate end.
Having a little different angle on the spring seemed to have solved the hang up issue with S&B primers.
Must give the primer sleeve a flatter fit in the channel.

There was never a problem with any other type primers before but the S&B seem a little flatter on the cup side and must be more apt to get caught on the primer in the tube above.

Anyway thought Id pass this along in case anyone else is having probs.

Thanks for the replies.

Euro brass does not have a radius to lead primers into the pocket that US brass has.

A hand cut chamfer works wonders on Euro brass in a progressive press to ease primer seating.
