So I ordered the Mosin Nagant yesterday, but I'm not sure if I did the right thing. I called them up and spoke to a "product specialist", and I asked him if he had any Nagants with low collector value but with good bore quality, etc. All he said was "The rifles are hand picked by our supplier", so I ordered it anyway. What do you guys think? Did I do the right thing?

Thanks,
-Rohann

The M44 I got from them was fine. The bore was bright with sharp lands, I do believe these are refinished in US. I know there is something stamped on my reciever stating this. I will check it and get back to you. Though, I will tell you, if you are looking for a shooter, these are of acceptable quality. NOT collectors, but definately shooters.

Yeah, stamped on the left side of the reciever is the following
M44 RUSSIAN 7.62X54R
CAI GEORGIA VT. (serial #)

Should be just fine. Mine seems to be doing fine and I picked it up from S.I.R. a couple of months ago. They've got import marks and have NO collector value but they shoot well enough, have been refurbed so you know that it won't be total garbage, and they're rather cheap for a store-bought rifle. Enjoy

Thanks guys. Hopefully it will arrive in good condition. I could care less if there is no collector value, as I'm looking for a shooter.

Thanks,

I ordered an M91/30 from them a few months back and can't find anything to complain about other than wishing that it lacked the importer's mark. It came with a nice set of accessories as well (cleaning tools, sling, bayo etc.).

My only real complaint was that one of my leather 'dog collars' for the sling broke almost immediately, though this was fixed with some Zip-ties (cable ties). Looks ugly but they work.

I bought a Garand from them when I was in University. Got a screaming deal ($250) and have no complaints about the rifle or the service. Mind you, I also spent a considerable amount of time hangning around the gun counter when I should have been studying.

I got 2 M44's from their last batch, Polish manufacture early 50's, mismatched bolts, bores in excellent condition, one has a small crack in the upper handguard. Price was right, $44 each.

man, they haven't had good milsurp deals like that in a long time... I got my first mosin there for 75 bucks I think, not a refurb or import marked or anything, just a nicely patina'ed 1915 westinghouse M91 (with lots of history, stamps etc)...No screaming deals like that anymore, although if they had any sense they might again start importing more mega cheapo milsurps from the states, I'd love to be able to pick up almost any bolt action milsurp imaginable for 150 bucks! then again I'd be even more broke...

FYI those are not refurb marks (although the rifles SIR has have been refurbed in european arsenals), they are importers marks from the company who brought the guns into the U.S.A...

As far as collectability goes, man, I am so sick of people short changing mosins! price does not necessarily mean collectibility! Most of the M44's and M91/30s I've seen at SIR, although refinished, have got LOADS of stamps. many different mfg dates... If those things could tell you where they've been, you would NOT be dissing them. would you put your nose up at a Garand potentially used on D-Day? why snub a mosin carved by Ivan's hand in a basement that was potentially used at stalingrad, kursk, berlin, etc?

So yes! you did the right thing! a mosin will bring you lots of joy. These are underappreciated now, because they are cheap and available (which is why you should love them! ammo's cheap too!). A mosin is a hell of a lot of rifle for the money. Get em now, cause in a few years they will be hot. Look at the following stateside! Im sure people thought the same kind of things years ago when Enfields and Mausers were available cheaply...

The mosins are underappreciated, just like the SKS IMHO. There are tons of both around now but the same was true for a lot of milsurp rifles back in the day, even 5-10 yeas ago I remember SIR's fall flier with deals like buy 1 m44 get 1 free.

As for collectability, many people hate import marks, i could care less but it's a big deal for the die-hard collectors.

$44 ?!?! Pray tell, how did you pull that off woodchooper??

SIR had thousands of the old Polish and Hungarian ones. They were the real "milsurp". A couple years back they were both priced at around $60-$70, if I remember corectly. Then about a year and a half ago, they ran out of the Hungarian ones(supposed to be better quality and a few dollard more expensive) and the Polish ones were reduced in price to $44 for getting rid of them quick...and quick they went... They were replaced by the "new", refurbished ones, which cost 3 times more.

They were in decent condition considering their age and source(East European military warehouses);blueing was worn and wood had many dings and scratches and they were lacking the cleaning rods and slings of course. But some were in good condition while others were garbage.
I was lucky, I got a real nice one, from the last batch of Polish ones. I went into the store to buy one(before they were sold out) and they showed me the last six rifles in the whole store...5 of them were garbage, just for parts, while the stocks could as well have been firewood. The last one had the bolt(apparently) broken. I got that one; paid my $40 something dollars for the gun, took it home and simply assebled the bolt right back. Done.
