I would like to find a unfired S&W 100 anniversary 1911 and wonder what they are worth. Any around, and would it be a good investment

I see these come up in excellent to mint condition and because they have paid a premium people try to get back at least what they paid. I don't see anyone lining up for these esp non-Colt. If you do decide to get one think about the Colt 100 anniversary edition. One was in EE the other day, maybe still around. I don't believe they are worth $1700 even if that is what they originally paid for it. I doubt they will appreciate much over time a there are lots around and while nice to look at they are not completely true to the originals. Just my 2c. If you just really like Smith 1911's go ahead but don't spend an arm and a leg thinking it will become a holy grail down the road.

Thanks for the info, like the looks of them. Looking for a paper weight not a investment.
Believe you sold me the best shooting rugger 44mag I ever owned few years ago. A 1957 blackhawk

I think the whole anniversary special edition/limited edition thing is more marketing hype than anything. It seems to go over bigger in the US (maybe more collectors?) but even there it doesn't always work. I remember people saying on US sites that they were seeing heavily discounted BHP 75th anniversary guns still sitting in stores a year or more after they came out. Now they seem to sell at about the same or just slightly higher point than an unmarked gun. An exception might be a true limited edition where the gun is numbered and marked as such but even those seem to be worth less on the open market than some owners expect.

Having said that I think they are kind of neat and wouldn't mind having one. I just think you need to be careful not to over pay.

I have a smith 100yr anniversary. It is the most beatuiful 1911 I have ever seen. It's fit and finish is amazing. I compete with it and have won a lot of matches with it. I think Smith makes one of the best 1911's out there, I dont plan to sell mine. it is too nice and an awesome shooter. Great value to, I paid $13xx for it. It blows away kimbers and all others at and above that price range.
