So i get home all excited about my new toy. open her up and right off the bat i see something wrong, well appears that way to me. when the slide is opened exposing the breaching port there is extensive machining marks. it is quit an eye sore. i dont know how to post pics if someone can pm me there email, i can send them the pics and they could post them here that would be much appreciated. i would like to know if this is common, and what is the opinion of my fellow gun nuts. any input and suggestions would be great. thanks

Here are two pictures of the effected area of the slide. My guess is someone on the line neglected to polish out the machining marks.I doubt it will effect the pistol's performance but you'd expect better quality control from S&W.

Those aren't machine marks, it is hand grinding..could be they missed the final finish polish. If that is the case they would probably cover it under warranty and send you a new slide or finish the one you have.
Bummer.... I hate it when that happens, I bought a new gun and cycled it a few times and then it locked up solid..had to send it back for repair, all this after waiting for 6 months for it to show up at the dealers.

I've seen two others (100 Anniversary addition's) and the finish is the same in that spot. One was from the low 100's and the other was from the low 200's. Odds are their all that way.

thanks for the input, i was actually going to ask if any body else has this issue on there models? i called north sylva today they told me if i were to send it to get refinished chances are im not going to see it for a very very long time, 1-2 years!!!???? called the vendor who i bought it from and they said well lets just give them till monday. still waiting for there reply. thanks for all the input

Had a similar problem with mine.
It was really difficult to cycle by hand. So i was putting snap caps thru it, and then it jammed solid and deformed my snap cap. Had to hammer it out from muzzle down. Really disappointing :(

I'm starting to think the same.
I wanted to keep it as a collectors item, but now i'm more worried that the thing doesnt even shoot hiccup free..................it mangled my snap cap, what would it have dont to a real round???

I didn't even to plan on racking the slide on mine, let alone shoot it.

But I'm now leaning a little closer to shooting it because of the marks in the slide.

I won't be sending mine back for a 1 to 2 year return time. I'm in the process of hand polishing the marks out myself. Looks like it will take some time and lots of patience but will be well worth the effort when it's done.

Provided it shoots well isn't S&W obligation fulfilled.

Certainly their reputation takes a hit.

Looks like mine may be here tmr. If mine isn't nicely polish the incentive to NOT shoot is gone :D . Gonna admit have never looked at the inside polish of my other 1911 or any other firearm. Just an utilitarian guy who don't look at undercarriage.
Any thoughts about we can do as buyers of these? As a group?

well i was and am planning to shoot mine, but as soon as i finish with NS, can anyone check there other 1911s and see if they have the same marks? mine is really tight, takes a bit of force to rack it. i want to shoot it just to make sure its functioning properly. but i must say i am happy with the exterior it is a nice looking piece, my only complaint is the engraving is very shallow and hard to see. whatever the S&W 1911 E plain jane is about the same price and ive always wanted a 1911 so final thoughts will be after i hit the range.
