Anyone know where I could buy a new S&W 25 in .45Colt. They make them new, listed on the web site. Anyone know if you could chamber .45ACP with moon clips in this gun? It seems that you can fire .45ACP at least in some of them. I would consider buying a older used one if someone has one FS.

Looks like no go with .45ACP. The ACP brass is smaller in diameter than the .45Colt, I'm guessing .002 but for sure smaller. Guess I have to for go that bright idea. I have seen Freedom Arms with a pistol that has both cylinders that seems the way to go. Not cheap though.

The diameter of the brass isn't an issue. The set back distance difference between the thin rimmed .45Colt and the .45ACP when used with moon clips very much is an issue. So no, it is not at all possible to do that.

For blued guns the model 25 is only available in .45Colt. If you want the gun which shoots moon clips in a blued finish the model you want is the model 22. Sometimes referred to as the model 1917. The stainless version is the model 625. S&W screwed up the model designations when they went to stainless in this case. Probably because the name "622" was already taken by a rimfire semi auto pistol.

Anyway for a blued .45ACP gun you want a model 22. For the stainless version you want the 625.

S&W does not do conversion cylinders because of the need for so much work to be done to switch out the cylinder on the crane and due to the need for the fore and aft spacing to be held closely to spec. There may be some such S&W packages out there but they were built at great cost by owners.

For the same money as buying a new Model 25 in the wrong caliber, you can buy a very clean 25-2 which is the same gun but in 45 acp. Unfortunately hard to find and they sell incredibly fast.

Made of unobtainium sometimes. :(

Shooters Choice Alberta has one listed right now and Roger is a great guy to deal with as well.

Yup. $1055.00, which unfortunately is about right. Last year Armco had a used one for $850 which I nearly caved in and bought. Someone is selling a 625, 5" in .45ACP on the EE for $1050, but it's ON HOLD now. They don't last long. (Then there was some joker not long ago who was asking $1800.00 for one. I doubt it sold.)

So I guess the bottom line on the Model 25 is it could be .45Colt or .45ACP but not both and no moon clips. If I could find a Model 22 or 1917 than I basically have a steel Model 625. I had a Model 625 but found a Ruger Convertable .45Colt/.45ACP so I sold it and went with the Ruger. The Ruger works but at this point shoots way low and to the right. I will have to file the front sight down to suit POA. The Model 625 is a sweet gun but not worth the high asking prices found on here. Some of them have been shot a lot as well.

S&W used the following code on the model 25, the 25-2 was the 45ACP version, moon clips, and a .451 barrel, the 25-5 was the 45 long Colt version with a .454 barrel. Really two very different guns.

The 625-8 was also .45 ACP, or at least mine is.

JimmieA, as to the high prices, the problem is they're desirable. Look at the prices for registered antique revolvers that don't require registration! (Even .455 Webleys converted to .45ACP & moonclips, which to me reduces their value.) Also, many of the 625s are/were made with dastardly, child-murdering, criminal-inducing 4" barrels, so the 5" are scarcer. FWIW, I think I paid $850 for mine in 2008.

Mind you, they command pretty high pries in the US, too. I just checked Gunbroker and a 625-8 like mine is listed at $899.00. Another just sold for $849. There's a 625-3, 3" going for $1650 (!!!) A JM version is offered for $1050. Model 25-2 in .45 ACP is $1,050. So maybe our prices up here aren't all that far out of line.

Since the USA has the best gun salesman that ever existed (Osamba_Bin_Obama) their prices are through the roof. Ammo is scarce as well. There is a big gun dealer near me and someone from the USA walked into the store and offered to buy everything he had in inventory. He had a big order with one of the big ammo manufactures and they called him up and said, we know you have an order and the price is ### but we can sell it here for way more so we want you to pay a higher price or we will sell this order to our USA customers. He had been dealing with them for years.

I looked at the Model 22 of 1917 but it looks like an old gun. I would be interested in a Model 25-2 if I could find one of them. Or I will have to make the Ruger work for me.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I appreciate it.
