So I was talking to a buddy today and he was saying that he has/is getting a S&W .308 magnum pistol. He says it is in mint unfired condition, and his father just ordered some rounds for it, which must be custom ordered. Was just wondering on some info about this firearm. History, price and any other info yous can get us. Thanks in advance ^.^

If he has a 30 Carbine S&W revolver it is extremely rare, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith And Wesson at least 3 are know to exist in private collections, it states that "S&W did produce, on a test basis, several revolvers with fixed and target sights and chambered in 30 Carbine that were built on the N frame" and that the revolver would go in the low five figures. I really doubt he has one but you never know, chances are his description is not correct as the caliber does not make sense.

I agree that 30 carbine makes a bit more sense, he hasn't really described it to me yet and I don't think I'll see it with my own eyes anytime soon since he lives in labrador (probably spelled that wrong, sorry about that) and we're both on Warrior Fitness Training @ St Jean... I know to keep a look out for $h!tpumps, but he was on my old platoon with me and he's not that kind of guy... I'll see if I can get some more info out of him about it... Thanks guys ^.^b

As far as I know, there's not even a ".308 Magnum" for rifles except the relatively rare .308 Norma Magnum, and I can't imagine revolver in that calibre. I was thinking that the only other oddball magnum was the recent .327 Federal magum, but I think all of S&W's revolvers in that calibre are all 4" or less so there probably aren't any in the country. My guess--it's something like a .357 or .44, or else it's not a S&W. Hmmm...ya know, the .44 Auto Mag was made from .308 cases trimmed to length. Could that be it? Now that would be cool.

Alrighty, back in basic and talked to buddy again, and finally got the crackberry up and running as well (damned bills). So he took some pictures (possibly to follow if I can figure a way to post them through BlackBerry. The revolvers in question are .57 special. His is a 6" nickel plated and his father has a 6" blued steel and a 4" blued steel. All are unfired and the 4" hasn't left the display box at all (so I have been informed). Now that we have some more details, what can we figure out about these lovely pieces?

Well I asked if he it was a .357 and he said no, .57 special. And that they had to custom order the rounds... Unfortunately I didn't see the markings on the side of the guns, I'll see if he can get his father to take pics of them, and see if I can post the pics he has

Or maybe is it a Model 57 in .41 Magnum? What calibre is written on the side of the barrel? I can post the pix if you like--PM me and I'll send you my email address.

That makes sense. From the provided info, that'd be my guess. Model 57, and the rounds are pretty special, you're not going to have the easiest time finding 41 magnum. Powerwise it's the happy medium between 357 mag and 44 mag, roughly the same as 10mm auto.

I'm not personally aware of any 57 calibre handguns, unless you're talking some really old round ball cap and ball black powder type (The manufacturers have been known however, to do things without informing me ).
