The 3rd edition of the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson indicates that 100 38-44 Heavy Duty model revolvers with lanyard rings were supplied to what it calls the "British Columbia police" in 1940.

Does anyone have one of these or know who has one? Perhaps in a museum or private collection?

I am trying to trace the origins of a 38-44 that I have that appears to have been altered and would like to compare s/n's and other features with samples of the B.C. guns.

Thanks,

Bob

I have a 5 inch S&W Heavy Duty in 38 Special.
It was used by the BCPP and has a rack number of 299 beside the BCP stamp directly on the bottom of the butt.
The serial # range of 5###X places mine made in 1939 or 1940. Mine has the lanyard ring and somewhere along the line a black plastic Pachmyr grip adapter was added to this revolver. Fixed sights & typical star diamond walnut grips. I cannot send pictures, sorry.

... Yes, they were issued to the BCPP, prior to they're being Disbanded and absorped into the RCMP, who took over. Some at least, of the former BCPP kept their Revolvers and MAY, perhaps un-officially, continued to use/carry the same revolver. .... David K

Just for some added info, I'll add this.
Mine I purchased off a forum member on the EE. He is an RCMP officer serving in BC.
He purchased this HD off an older RCMP officer, who had the option to purchase it around the date of 1970-71. That was supposedly when the S&W Model 10 was adopted in police service.

The older RCMP officer used it as a duty sidearm in Manitoba for some years before 1970. Prior to that it was a few years in a police armory when the BCPP service was disbanded as David K indicated. From 1940-1950(??) it was used by the BCPP service.

PS: It is rumoured that the BCPP force also had some .45 calibre Colt 1911s in service. Now that would be a rare find indeed!

Thanks

Thank you everyone for your input. Much appreciated.

I plan to go to Roy Jinks the S&W historian for more info on the somewhat unusual c. 1938 38-44 that I have.
