I'm buying a S&W 500 and am looking to press some reduced load / target ammunition. Looking for people experienced with this calibre opinions on which projectiles and powder to use.

Thanks

Trail boss loads would be ideal.

Bingo! any bullet weight with trailboss is an ease to shoot. i typically run my cast 440gr (lee mold) or 375gr spirepoints (see avatar picture) bullets with 9-10 grs of trailboss. i would equate it to a 38spl.

A powder that I have been working with is HERCO. Picked up some cast 330gr. RNFP . So far 19.0grs. to 19.4grs. have been working very well. 1350fps on average for 19.0grs.

have you tried tailboss with a similar bullet weight, if so how's the recoil compare? Not that i need more powders for my 500, but i'm always interested in trying new ones even if they are old and discontinued.

For my reduced loads I shoot Berrys 350 grain plated bullets over a minimum load of IMR4227. Not a real light load but it brings the bullets down to about 1,675 FPS according to the manual and a good speed for the plated bullets. For the slowest 350 grain load on the Hodgdon site the Titegroup minimum load is pretty slow.

Hodgdon Titegroup 11.0 grains 1,032 FPS 23,100 PSI

Have not tried trailboss, but as for the Herco, they have it written right at the bottom "great for magnum handguns" problem was no info on the internet for load data. I even asked alliant but got no help.
