Ok guys I really need your help. I'm pretty familiar with revolvers but I'm a lot better with pistols. Having said that.... a friend of mine who owns a S&W 500 asked me to look at his revolver because it would not #### back anymore but it works fine in double action.

1. So I took the whole revolver apart (except for the cylinder), inspected every parts, cleaned everything and reassembled it....... same results.
2. I disassembled ‘’my own’’ S&W 500, took all my parts and installed them in HIS revolver…same results.

Now my own revolver has the same problem as my friend, it will not #### back and when it does it’s really hard to do. I took it personal and just spent 5 hrs trying to figure the problem out with no luck. Here’s what I did so far…..

- I disassembled everything and reassembled it again making sure it was done right (more than once).
- I tightened the cylinder rod and made sure it wasn’t bent.
- I compared all the parts with the ones in my S&W 460 and they are all good and properly installed.
- I don’t have the problem if I remove the cylinder, the hammer cocks back fine.
- It also cycles fine when I toss the ‘’hand’’ aside while cocking the hammer.

My guess is that the cylinder stop is not getting away fast enough but the part and spring are good and properly installed. What the hell am I missing

Thanks again for your help guys !

Can't really help you but could the lock be the problem?

Have you tried different ammo? My .357 had cylinder lockup and it turned out to be the ammo I was using. I use Remington now and have had no problem at all. It's a long shot, but I was having a similar problem and this was the issue. My two cents.

The problem is either the hammer or trigger, or both (if you didn't try yours in his revolver), if so will have to be replaced. Also check to see if the strain screw, the screw in the bottom of the front grip, is tight. If not, and the screw is backed out a ways, the hammer will not go back far enough, called knuckling, for the hammer to catch on the trigger for single action. One other possibility is that there is a small diameter rod inside the trigger return spring that is a tad long preventing the action from going into single action mode.

I would also look at the sear engagement. Pull the side plate and look if it's binding and doesn't engage on the hammer's notch.

well found the probleme this morning. after lots of troubleshooting I came to the conclusion that the bolt was hanging on the hammer in some way.

I removed the bolt, cleaned the bed where it sits, sanded the bolt just a bit, cleaned the bolt, reinstalled everything and... voila !!!

thanks for all your tips
