I've had a few failure to fires on my .357 lately (hammer strikes primer but only slightly dimples it). The gun is about 10 years old so i'm going to change the main spring, but i'm wondering if i should change the hammer nose as well?

Any advice?

You can adjust the main spring so it will hit the primer harder, it may have backed itself off over the years. Could be youve also got some ammo with a harder primer...try some different ammo, or tightening the mainspring screw a bit may help again as well.

Sounds like an earlier attempt at a light trigger:mad: . It may very well be the strain spring which controls the tension on the mainspring. You may want to tighten it (little screw on front of grip frame which looks like it screws into the main spring) a bit perhaps a qtr turn until it reaches reliable and consistent strikes. It will definately make the trigger pull harder but backing off the spring is NOT the way to smooth or lighten the trigger pull. If you can reset to factory spec that wil be dandy but dont try to use that as an adjustment screw to ease trigger pull.
Good luck.
Cheers:cheers:

SDC - I've been using reloaded and factory ammo

Super 7 - i heard about that re-call, i'll look into it more

Silverado, RT, Rod, daBear - i've tried tightening the strain spring before it definitely helped, but it made the trigger pull unbelieveable heavy (at least 12lbs.)

.... Perhaps the re-call you're thinking of, was a long time ago, and that involved a "bushing" being fitted around where the firing pin went through the frame. Mostly if not all, were for the 686, and was for the very early ones. ...... David K.
