My new to me 586 is not hitting the primer hard enough to fire
all the time.It works fine with CCI primers but winchester are only
firing about half the time.Is there some adjustment to make it
hit the primer harder

Check the mainspring.

Remove the grip if it covers the rear of the grip. One screw is at the bottom of the rear of grip, see if it's tight. Some people loosen it off for a lighter trigger.

Hammerspring tension screw is in front of grip, below trigger guard. May need the spring tension increased(new hammer springs available from Wolff). Do you have new model with transfer bar(check for poor fit or dirt). Are your cylinder parts worn? , allowing cylinder to be too far forward. Make sure primers are fully seated in pockets. Federal are the most sensitive primers, used by many with this problem. good luck

Tighten the Strain Screw as mentioned above, over-travel adjustment not set correctly, debris in the action.

If all else is kosher, and your 686 is the version with the frame mounted firing pin, there is an longer aftermarket version.

Cobo, just a note to say that the screw is not an ADJUSTMENT! It is intended to be pinched tight all the time. It's only there to allow the spring to be slacked off for removal.

Now many folks do indeed use it to adjust the tension. But as you've seen it doesn't have a lock of any sort. So it's best to not use it that way.

If it was a brand new gun then it was not tightened enough. If it's a used "new to you" gun then the previous guy either forgot to pinch it tight or was using it as an adjuster.
