S + W 627 vs a well tuned 686?

I want to buy a nice shooting DA revolver as a reward to myself for a few things inculding too much overtime. I am not one to buy just for the cool factor ie the performance centre. Just want a nice revolver to shoot lots, and for, I hope, many years.

Assumptions on my part, opinions welcome:

1) The performance centre 627 should be as smooth as an average guy would need or want outside of serious competion. Therefore no need for the smith to touch this one.

2) The 686 could be tuned as nice as the performance centre 627 for $100 to $150?

3) The grip is about the same size on both guns even though the 627 is an N frame and there not an issue for small hands?

Thanks, and any opinions welcome...

or you could get a performance center 686!

For the money a stock 686 with a bit of smith work is a better deal. The performance center 27 may hold a bit more value .....

Ruger22,
I can't tell you which one is better for you. I can't even decide for myself which one I prefer. The 627 certainly has the looks and trigger and feels balanced in my hands even though it's a larger "N" frame. The 5" bbl looks and feels right and I really like the gold bead sight. The 8 rounds is also nice.
On the other hand, I really enjoy shooting the 686 even though it feels a bit front heavy with the 6" bbl. The NIB 627 ended up costing about $500 more than the 686 (which I paid $600 NIB - Estate sale). Either HG will shoot better than me.
Why decide....get both, and add a .44Magnum while your at it:rolleyes:

Gahhhhh! Gun envy!, Give us the 627...we wants it , we wants it my precious!

From my experience, the 686 is already as smooth as an average guy would want outside of serious competition. If the single action trigger on 686P was made any lighter, you'd probably be able to set it off with a fart. I’m sure that the Performance Center is an excellent gun, but so is the 686 (at almost half the price).
