Full house factory loads in my 5" 629 are pretty tame. Start him off with a few cylinders of .44Spl and go from there.
If you are a reloader you can download .44 magnum to mild paper punching rounds with very little recoil. Don't start him off with a box of jacketed hot loads, you'll just teach him bad habits like flinching. As the previous poster said .44 specials are pretty mild.
