So I've been wanting to get an AR style rifle for a while now, and I think it is finally time. I'm thinking that the M&P 15 looks like a nice gun, and from a good brand, but I literally know nothing about AR's so I'm looking for a little advice.

I've been watching the EE for a long time to see what comes up for sale and what it all looks like, but I've only ever seen a M&P 15 come up for sale once... Is there a reason for this? Are there not many around for sale because no one buys them? Or do lots of people buy them and simply not sell them?

What else is there in the same price range that may be comparable / better?

This'll work better if you throw a number out, what do you want to spend ?
There's nothing special about the m&p, it's a mid grade ar.

I wouldn't mess around and go straight to a vltor/noveske build from armtac if I were you.
You'll end up spending the same amount of money getting the m&p just how you want it, and still have a lower quality/looser fitting ar.

$1300 - $1500

This is true... I'm hoping for a Boxing Day sale...

You've got time to research then. There are plenty of great ARs at that price point so look at what features are important to you (what are you planning to do with it? Plinking 1X/month, multi-gun, <75m, >100m, etc?). You have how much you want to spend, now you just need to narrow down what you want it to do and then keep an eye out for some Boxing Day deals. Congrats on it finally being "time"...you won't regret being an AR owner, they are a bucket of fun.

I'm looking for something that will be good for plinking at up to 100 yards, and I may possibly look at getting into 3 gun in the future.

Daniel Defense will be about 1600 but its far better! Trust me on this, don't waste your money on crap, buy a reputable brand when it comes to an AR.

That sw is low tier, and you'll just wind up selling it in 2 months.

Lequille country store in Annapolis Royal just got a S&W M&P15 in. It's a 14.5" ( might be 16" under counter in glass case). It has a threaded barrel with flash suppressor. I think earlier models might not have had threaded barrel. Very nice looking rifle!! They told me price was between $900-1000.magpul rear sight

If you are thinking you might be going stateside for 3gun, get a barrel 16" or longer and a non-Chinese make. If you are staying in Canada with it, 12-14.5" barrels will do the trick nicely, including norinco's offerings. If your budget is for an AR all kitted out, you might want to look at the norincos...if your stated budget is just for the bare bones rifle then I'd keep your options open and stay away from the Norcs but that's just one shooter's opinion.

I appreciate the Stateside info. As far as the budget and what I want from it, this is just for the bare bones gun.

There are things that I like about the M&P but they are an entry level AR. During the first year Stag was making their AR rifles but they went their own way after that. The sporter versions lack the dust cover and forward assist. The quality is decent but nothing special. Don't waste your time with their stripped down rifles. It will end up costing you more.

The S&W also has a sporter barrel. Not M4 profile. Which is good and bad. First off it's likely very accurate as it's a 5R rifled barrel most likely from Thompson centre. But most want either a M4 contour, bull barrel or a pencil barrel. So it doesn't fit into the most popular choices.
