I have one of the S&W M&P 9 mm range kits and I like it and I am thinking that at some point I might like to get the 45 ACP version as well.
What I would like to know is will the 45 ACP version fit the 9 mm version holster and will the back straps from a 9 mm fit the 45 ACP?

The M&P 45 won't fit in a "full size" M&P9 holster - the slide is longer, it might (don't have one, but since length was the only issue I'd assume it would) fit in an M&P9 Pro (or L) holster. I never tried the backstraps between the 2, both came with 3 so I didn't need to. I would guess that since the grips are very, very close to the same size it would probably work.

So I guess what I'm saying is "no" and "maybe".

Nope...the 9mm/.40M&Ps are slightly smaller than the .45ACP version...the .45 will not fit. I know this because I have both, and holsters for both. Interestingly, the smaller gun fits pretty well in the .45 holster, although not perfectly [depends on the holster, I guess]. Note that it's not just a matter of barrel length...the .45 is a tad larger in several dimensions.

Secondly...yes, the backstraps for the .40 will fit on the .45. I'm a little surprised, but I just gave it a try, and whaddaya know!

Thanks enefgee and Tengoo that is what I thought would be the case but just wanted to confirm it though. I have an extra back strap in the Flat Dark Earth that I got for my 9 mm and I was hoping that I could use it on a 45 ACP as well.
Tengoo how much larger is the grip size on the 45 ACP over the 9 mm/40 S&W version?

Oh yeah...you just had to ask, didn't you...? [;) just kidding...] I have a medium grip on my .40 and a small on my .45. I wasn't real scientific about measuring, but as nearly as I can tell, there's almost no difference with that setup. The .45 does feel a little more substantial in my hand, but that could just be the effect of the 5 extra ounces the .45 weighs and its longer slide. I would have to say that if you are comfortable with one M&P, you'll be happy with both.
