Hey guys... I wasn't able to find anything via search (it seems & isn't a valid term so searching for "M&P" yields nothing for me) but was curious if anyone knows if it's possible to get S&W M&Ps with a thumb safety in Canada. I have not seen any available for sale, does anyone know? Thanks.

M&P 40 doesn't have a thumb safety.

you sure about that?

^ Yours isn't the only one out there.

I am always on the lookout for a deal on an M&P so I look at every store I go into. I've never seen one so far. Perhaps North Sylva the importer, could better direct you to any business that has ordered them.

I don't think I have ever seen any M&Ps with thumb safeties other than the .45s in Canada. S&W does make them, but they aren't that common. You can see if your favorite dealer can order one through the Canadian distributor, but your best bet may be to import one through irunguns.

I answered with the information I have. So I should edit my response to. "The .40 in MY safe" doesn't have a thumb safety. I've never seen an M&P in person that has a thumb safety.

There is no thumb safety on the one in my safe.

S&W makes many variations of their M&P pistols to meet bid or contract requirements for different agencies. The thumb safety versions have been around for years but are still not as popular down south as the non-safety versions and virtually unheard of up here. But that said, they do make them. ;)

what Krausb said.
if you look at S&W website you will see 4-6-10 different offerings of each different pistols.
some of the external safety some dont, some are CA compliant and such.
the external safety ones are not widely seen up here in Canada.
i know my dad has a 9mm one that has it and its the only one other then the 22's that ive ever seen.
my 9/40/45 all do not have it.
its the same with the magazine disconnect.
ive seen some that have the warning on them that they CAN fire without the mag in and ive seen ones that say on them that they CANT fire without the magazine in them. same deal, some people want something different on their gun for their police force or whatever and S&W does a run of them.

Appreciate the help so far... pretty much aligns with what I figured. I know they exist, but have never seen one for sale in Canada (other than the .22s... I'm looking for a 9mm myself).

My question would be why would you want one?

My current one doesn't have it, was considering getting one with just because. Also to sort of align with shooting 1911s and keep the thumb safety feel across the board. I also figured since even M&Ps with the thumb safety still have all the others, it's optional anyway so it I could just leave it off if I wanted. Been a while since I wasted money on this hobby, figured this might be a good place to start back up lol

Irunguns lists the thumb safety versions.

Cool, thank you.

My 9mm doesn't have it. Is it possible to retrofit the safety?

I have heard it technically is with parts direct-ordered from S&W but the challenge being it is very very difficult to obtain the parts these days. This is just what I have heard, have not done a lot of research on it

Pretty much sums it up. If you can manage to scrounge up the parts, it can be done.

It's not a drop in part, I think the sear block (trigger block maybe?) and sear have to be changed as well, no? or is it an issue with the actual frame?
