Firearm: M&W M&P 15 Sport 2
Modifications: Replaced butt stock, pistol grip, and handguard
Ammo: 315RNDS Barnaul .223 FMJ Bimetal lead core
My wife and I took another trip out to the range Monday. The weather was overcast and on/off raining everywhere in Southern Ontario but the club it seems.
This time the ground was almost dry and the puddles gone. However the wind was high and crossing the range from the left most of the time with short gusts from the right every few minutes. Not strong enough to push me around but strong enough to wrap the range flag around the pole 3 times before we left.
While heading to the berm to setup my targets I was able to recover my targets from last week. As I suspected I'd shot out the centre of the top target and the scope was ready to finetune.
As I hadn't had a chance to look over new scopes yet I once again used the Millett 1-4x24 on the quick mount but moved it forward a few spots on the rail. The wind and new rail position required a new zero check. I was about 5" low and 2" left from POA. (I did 10RD each at bottom target, top left and bottom left crosses.)
At this point I realized a few things; I forgot that this scope was a 1/2" click and not 1/8", I was mixing up my R/L U/D adjustments to correct POA/POI, and I wasn't going to get a good zero with this bloody wind. I was hitting all over the place so went back to shooting centre mass.
Once I stopped being so serious about it things got better and I just enjoyed shooting the M&P15. I had sprayed some G96 into the bolt and around the chamber and stopped halfway through the 300RNDS to do it again. Never had an issue, all rounds fired fine.
I did stop every 75 rounds or so to use the CZ 527. This time I was using typical surplus corrosive ammo. The cheap Simmons 3-9x40 was okay, and seems to be the minimum I need for 100m, but the wind and the ammo wasn't helping my groups any.
So by the end of the day I'd gone through 315RNDS .223 and 40RNDS of 7.62x39.
The M&P15 is shooting about 4 inches high and about an inch to the left now but at least I'm on paper in an expected location again. (Need to remember to bring my reading glasses next time so I don't miss the 1/2" click markings!)
The CZ 527 did okay with the Simmons but needs a better scope. This scope was meant for a .22LR but all I have handy for it at the moment. I did notice when I went to remove the stock, so I could clean and put boiling water down the barrel, that the bolts are no longer at 25psi. They turned easily so about 55RNDS is enough to free them up. No old or new cracking has occurred yet either.
At least the only tick we saw was crawling across the bench, which was surprisingly hard to kill. I had bought some ant killer with 0.25% Permethrin the day before and sprayed my pants and shoes so they would be ready for today.
One of the few times my wife joined me shooting. She thought the M&P15 was "okay". (She's only fired a .22LR GSG 1911, snub nose .38, PPS-50 .22LR, and now the M&P15.)
