Hello all,

I decided to get into pistols for the new year, and a local gun retailer directed me to the M&P9 range kit for $660 (the one that comes with pistol, 3 mags, speed loader and holster + carrying cse). This looked like a good value, but I wanted to get thoughts from owners of this particular weapon before I go and buy it.

On a somewhat related note, If anybody's got a miscellaneous tip on technique, weapon choice, stance etc. for a new pistol shooter, I'm always willing to learn. :D

We should mention the dealer as they are a sponsor: P&D Enterprises. I bought mine from them 2 weeks ago. I was shopping between a few different pistols but the range kit/price made the M&P9 an easy decision. Tons of great reviews online and so far, I'm pretty pleased with mine. I've only had it to the range once but itching to get back. The holster is pretty darn good, 3 mags is a real plus (although mine needed a little tweaking to fit 10 rounds), and the speedloader is a brilliant device that really saves your thumbs.

I'd say go for it.

Thanks, I've been leaning towards this kit for a while now. Can't wait till my club paperwork comes back in January.

I love shopping at P&D. They don't seem to mind me drooling on the counters.

An excellent value - the pistol on it's own would be a deal at $660 - the holster they include is good quality as is the mag pouch, and the loader (an Uplula) is one of those things that once you've used, you won't want to be without.

M&P - Great gun.

The range kit - great value.

You may find the trigger is heavy and/or gritty. If you do notice Apex Tactical has the parts you can install yourself for better performance.

Shooting tips - Join your club and see if you can get some coaching. Nothing beats "in-person" training. NOTHING. That being said the Magpul series of videos have a very good set of videos on pistol shooting. Watch a section of the video the night before a range trip, go try what was covered and then go back and watch the same section again, if you notice you were doing something wrong repeat that section (after re-watching the section again). Once you have a section down pat, move to the next one. But nothing beats in-person training.

Great kit and great gun at a super price!! I like mine even more then my glock now, so I say buy it. Like others have said you can't go wrong.

I knew the Americans liked it, I didn't realize it was so popular up here too. o-O. Everybody who's replied has nothing but good things to say, or knew how to fix what they didn't like.

I have both the Glock G22 and the M&P 9 Pro Series. The ergonomics of the grip is way better than the Glock, IMO. The palm swells are a way nicer design than the backstraps on the Glock also. The gun basically fits like a glove. M&P is a better choice if you are a lefty because the slide release is ambi and the mag release can also be changed to the other side. The M&P takedown is just as easy as the Glock and for spare parts availability, Brownell's carries them all. The Carry & Range Kit is the best deal around. It's only about $50 more than the standard M&P and an extra mag costs $50 alone. I'm not saying that the Glock is a bad gun but it's just that the M&P has what the Glock is missing.

The M&P was specifically designed to address the things about Glock pistols that US police officers didn't like, also the M&P was designed as a 40 and then scaled back to a 9mm. When Glock built the first 17, there was no 40 S&W to build it around, hence if you're going to have a Glock issue, it will be with a 40 cal.

great gun, great kit, awesome value,

get the jane version , yes it has a pink back strap, but you can use the non pink backstrp and it comes with fibre sights and the apex parts,

awesome upgradfes for little $

Just hit 1000 rounds with mine... Not one stoppage or problem.

Took my buddy out with it who ignored my advice and limp wristed the hell out of it. Brass kept hitting him in the forehead and it STILL didn't have any stoppages.

Awesome gun :D

A great choice and it's easy to pick a used one up for $500 on the EE. I bought one off of a coworker who put thousands of rounds through it before shooting it in NY in the 2011 games. I've since put hundreds of rounds through it without issue. The mag springs are pretty stiff and I've heard sissy's complain about a stiff trigger (put your race gun down, harden the f@%k up and go to the gym once in awhile ;)). Otherwise unless yor shooting bullseye or building a race gun a solid choice.

I got a few 1000s rounds through mine and I only ever cleaned it once, not one single malfunction ever. I like to shoot it more then my other pistols, witch all cost more then this one.

Thanks for all the advice!

The only other pistol I had in mind was a Buckmark .22 for the cheap ammo. For a while I was stuck between the M&P9 and a .22, since I can't afford to buy both.

EDIT: Does anyone know of a .22 conversion kit for the M&P9? That would solve my money debate pretty nicely.

I bought the range kit and I like it, I cant use the holster at my club but its still a great kit and I love the gun, I have about 500 rounds through mine so far. I will be looking into upgrading the trigger, as mentioned it is a bit heavy and does feel gritty.

No 22 kits that I know of. If someone ever makes one, it would sell very well.

Crap. Oh well. I'll wind up with at least two handguns at some point, as I will need high volume practice.
