S&W M29 - rare in Canada?

So it turns out that I need a S&W M29, the classic with wooden grips and blue (not SS). Of course they dont make it anymore and there dont seem to be many on EE.

Are they rare here? Did S&W export all models up to the latest (-6?)

Not rare. Lots in Canada . Keep an eye on the EE they do turn up from time to time.

Lots around man. Keep your eyes open and you shouldn't be looking more than a week or two for a nice one (budget may increase your search time)
 
Depending on which one you want, the cost will vary a lot. A minty 29-2 with all the original goodies will set you back a chunk of change. A rough one less.

I got a great deal on a 29-2 (rough exterior but minty internals) from Epps and sent it off for a few tweaks.

Newer models come up and sell for less.

Like the others have said, keep your eyes on the EE and even the local shops. Milarm in Edmonton had a decent 29-2 for quite a while.
 
Which model is the one to get? I hear the older ones had issues with some screw coming lose that were fixed in the 2 latest versions.

Are there issues or models that should be avoided?
 
I understand that you are referring to the new, recently produced "classic" line...and no, there don't seem to be hardly any that made it up here.

The reference Bigi posted is a good read. Basically the 29-2 were the last of the pinned and recessed 44MAG (pinned barrel and recessed cylinder).

S&W stopped that with the 29-3. The earlier M29's had some issues with hot loads and the -3 introduced the Endurance package. I've heard older guns that went back to S&W for work got this fitted too.

It's not that M29 can't handle heavy loads, it deals with 180 & 240gr full house loads fine. When stepping into heavier and hotter loadings I'd get a Ruger (yes, they are heavy and some what ugly but damn they are strong).

I'm a big fan of the M29-2, as it was the last and many view as the best of S&W workmanship (old school). However, I won't turn my nose up at any pre-lock M29 :D

Personally, the S&W lock is a waste of time and ruins the looks. You can get a plug to fill it in after removal but why bother. Plenty of good pre-lock M29 around.

Theres one on the EE right now for 950 with 8 3/8 bbl.
