I have a S&W mod 41 that has been developing an ejection problem for some time? It seems to be worsening and it is time to do something about it. I am thinking I should order a new extractor claw. Any sugestions And any ideas where to get S&W parts in Canada?

Thanks

S&W model 41

Had the same problem with mine. I did two things to help cure the problem. First, make certain the chamber is not fouled with wax and powder. Second, remove the extractor and with a diamond file, file a slightly positive hook angle on the claw, such that only the claw tip grips the case rim. Do not file to a sharp point, leave about a .015 to .030 flat.

If this doesn't work, but I think it will, there is a little additional work you can do, but I won't describe it unless you really need it. When I completed my 41, it went through 50 rounds without one FTF or FTE. I haven't fired it in about three weeks now, but I'm confident I've resolved the problem.

I just purchased one with the same issue, have a friend that had one with the same problem, he solved it with the Wolffe ejector spring kit and I am going to do the same, seems to be a common issue.

Here is one method that I came across for an extractor tune-up. Haven't tried it.

I think a light sharpening of the angle with a file as mentioned would work too but you don't want the rim gap to get too big and drop the cases too soon.

Haven't even shot the M 41 that came showed in my mail 3 whole days ago yet!!! Hoping it doesn't have any issues.

The 41's are known to not work too well if they get the least bit dirty. Clean the gun after a brick of shooting. The other thing that suprisingly helps is to put a drop of oil on your first bullet. Giving a quick squirt of WD40 into the chamber will do the same thing as the drop of oil.

I've shot hundreds of rounds without any FTF or FTE after giving a squirt of WD40.

Did you change ammo? Smith 41's are extremely particular about what ammo they'll both shoot well and cycle. Clean it, but do not put any oil in the chamber.

They usually love CCI Green Tag ammo when you can get it.I have the 7" barrel and it digests everything Iv'e fed it?Harold

Just back from the range with mine. Tried 5 or 6 different kinds of ammo and they all cycled great.

I can see it being the type of gun that needs regular cleaning. If it doesn't eject the first thing to do would be to clean out the bolt really well and make sure there is no gunk under it.

When I first purchased my 41 (used) it was extremely picky about what I fed it. Once I found that Remington standard velocity Target ammo worked well, I purchased 10 bricks. That should do me a while. I haven't had a single problem since.

Your milage may vary.

Cheers,

"...Once I found that..." Yep. Mine will cycle and shoot Remington Target and IVI standard velocity and nothing else. The price of the ammo means nothing either.
"...they all cycled great..." Target velocity? How well do they shoot? 5 or 6 brands may cycle, but won't necessarily shoot well. Mind you, if you have a 41 that cycles that many brands of target ammo, count yourself lucky. Most of 'em work with one or two brands of target ammo. Note the operative word is 'target'. HV ammo isn't the same thing. Causes too much muzzle jump for formal target shooting.
They're great pistols, but most are extremely finicky about target ammo.
If anybody tells you that high velocity ammo will damage your pistol, they're confused. It won't. Lots of our Southern cousins use 'em for hunting.

Only target ammo I had was CCI standard velocity the rest was a bit of everything - Cyclones, mini mag, Federal Champion, etc. Wasn't really worried about what was grouping best yet. Just getting the feel of a new gun and seeing if it would hiccup on any of the stuff I happened to have in my box.

Probably won't ever take up serious target work with it but its sure nice to make those little holes stay so close together.
