Why does every time I going looking for a particular gun the supply seems to dry up.

I've posted a WTB ad but nothing but crickets, one person sent me a lead on a new 27 but I'm looking to go old school 28 or 28-2 with 6" barrel.
I've been thinking about importing but with the low dollar and fees it just doesn't make sense, by my calculations it would cost
Around $1100 for something in average condition. Comments?

Has anyone seen any of these for sale lately at a local gunshop or someone you know that may be willing to sell? I'm looking for something in good to very condition as it will get some range time, also prefer original wood grips.

They are around. I just sold a very nice EX+ condition to a friend. I have one more in the safe EX+ with box and papers, but it is part of the collection. On the other hand, I have never shot it, and it is collecting dust, and I did notice your WTB ad....Now, if you wanted a nice Model 27-2, I've still got a couple of those blue 6" in presentation box, and it would almost be less painful to part with one of those....
 
Am I correct, the Mod 27 and 28 are the same, the difference is only in the better finish of the mod 27?

If this is so, I would go with the Mod 27.

I own a Mod 28 with a 4"barrel, it's a great gun, but the finish on the Mod 27 is much nicer.
 
I'd be patient if i was you. I think$1100 is way to much for a 28 (It's more than I paid recently for a near mint 27-2). I'd bide my time and wait for one to show up on the EE

The Model 27 and 28 are essentially the same gun, but the attention to finish on the 27 isn't just limited to a superior blue polish, the internals were also cleaned up and more hand fitting was involved. It was S&W's answer to the Python, and they made sure the tolerances were much more exacting than the Model 28 which is essentially a service revolver. The parts were assembles without the same degree of fitting by any stretch, though a gunsmith like Murray Charlton could probably have your 28 running like a 27 for a few $.....but then you could have bought the 27 in the first place for that same money and had a beauty finish on it too!

Thanks, makes sense to me. I would be in for that 27 in a heartbeat.

BTW $1100 for a Mod 28 is about $400-$500 too much.

Your info is incorrect. The Python was Colts answer to the 27. The 27 was made way sooner then the Python was.

I find that guns kind of come or go in waves. You won't see a 28 for 6 months then in the span of a month you'll see 5 nice deals. Same applies for 27's or Python's or whatever it is you happen to be looking for. Sometimes the hunt is part of the fun other times you may stumble into something you don't fully appreciate until years later when you finally realize what a find you made. Be patient, stick in an ad and one is bound to pop up.

People selling 28's usually ask for the same money as 27s, so don't bother with the 28. Also do you really like/need the original grips? True that 27s are way less plentiful than the ubiquitous 686, that is why patience and perseverance will reward you. You have to literally be on the EE every hour to catch a mint 27. You have to put in the time and effort. No shortcuts, no secrets. That's how I find stuff I want, guns or parts or accessories, because the early bird gets the worm. Even if you stalk the EE every hour, still no guarantee you'll catch one. But if you don't put in the time, it is guaranteed you won't find one.
 
S&W 28, 6" was my first actual purchase gun. I loved it & still want it back, but I managed to acquire a 4" 28 prohib last year, but it needs more gun smithing to make it work. I'll get to it when I get more cash, however, I do know where there is a very sweet S&W model 27 factory 3.5" barrel prohib. It's actually a pre-27 N frame, & was made before S&W adopted their numerical system. Owner would sell it in a minute for C$1000.00. This is a very rare prohib too!!!
 
I have found the WTB in the EE very useful but you also have to stalk the EE for the wanted item.

Lots of people don't bother with the WTB Ads and just post on the EE. Good deals go fast.

M28's have been popping up on the EE lately, more so than other times in recent memory.

Also get a copy of Canadian Access to Firearms (https ://canadianguns.com/)

Plenty of guys still not online, old school paper listings of firearms.

Keep the faith, be patient. I've found a few items that I didn't think were possible.

On my "27" 5" BBL. "5 screw", The top strap< & top of the BBL. is checkered .

**** While i'm here; Any one know where I could source a set of Original , or original "looking " grips for this "N" frame ???
