What is the current value on these revolvers? I am talking about a model 29 made around 1970, probably a 29-2 variant with the pinned barrel and recessed chamber. It have a 8 3/4 barrel, the condition is unknown but most likely in excellent condition. Comes with the wooden case, the foam and felt is perfect shape. A Bianchi shoulder hostler is also provided. Is the 8 3/4 more desirable than the 6 inches?

Thanks a bunch!

A three-screw frame Model 29 with pinned barrel and recessed cylinder would indeed be a 29-2. Although the 8-3/8" barrel is less common than the 6-1/2" barrel, I'm not sure that this translates into higher collector value. Personally, I prefer the looks and balance of the 6" or 6-1/2" barrel over longer ones.

I would guess around $800 to the right buyer if the gun is truly excellent condition and complete with case, accessories, and holster.

The only way I could see myself buying an 8-3/8" gun would be if the price was right and to have the barrel shortened to 5", like the rare H.H. Harris Model 29s.

$800 only? I was expecting more since a 686 can fetch $600. A brand new Model 29 is listed at $1200 USD on S&W website, am I reading this right?

I bought a 8 3/8ths Model 29-2 (made in 1972) in excellent condition for $725,however,it didnt have the presentation case which would add about $150 to that if its in excellent condition.

The 8 3/8ths barrels go for a bit less than the 6 1/2 barrels.I really like the barrel length though as it looks quite in balance on that big N frame!

Keep in mind that new 686s typically sell for just under $1,000. The relative cost difference between gently used older models and brand new ones likely isn't much different for either a Model 686 or a Model 29.

Also, the 29-2 is reasonably common; I would guess it is probably the most common version of the Model 29 on the used market. The really collectible ones are the following:

-Pre-Model 29s in either four or five screw configuration
-Model 29-1s (four screw frame, ejector rod changed to left-hand thread). These are probably the rarest variant, as the three screw 29-2 was introduced only a year later.
-Four screw Model 29s (no dash number)

Of course, collectible value is highly dependent on condition, with it dropping substantially for average condition guns.

The 29-2 sell in the EE for between 650-750. They come up fairly frequently. You say your unsure of the condition, that makes a big difference.
