I purchased a Smith and Wesson 1911PD a few months back(don't have it anymore). I couldn't get groups better than six inches at ten yards from a rest and couldn't figure it out. I new it wasn't me cause I'd switch over the my glock and could make smiley faces on the targets. Later on I was looking down the bore from the muzzle and noticed there was no rifling on the top of the barrel! Well angered by this I proptly took it back and trade it for a rifle(happy as heck now). Then when I tried emailing Smith and Wesson I never got a response. I tried countless times for a month. When I called I just got left on hold. Has anyone else had issues like this or am I just an unlucky FOP?

Did you try M.D. Charlton or Wortner's? They are both S&W warranty centres and generally have a good reputation.

That's pretty bad.

I'm a big fan of Smiths but I've purchased more used ones than new. Smiths in their glory days were unbeatable. I would definitely agree that their quality control has taken a nosedive in recent years though (expect when buying Performance Center guns, obviously).

Only new Smiths I bought were a 686-8, a PC629 (what a beauty), a 1911DK and a 610-3. Apart from a rattly rear sight on the 686, I only had problems with the 610, in which I had to install a set of Wolff springs to get a decent double-action trigger pull. That's a very superficial complaint when compared to missing rifling, though!

Hmmm, my M&P has run absolutely flawlessly, never a single failure, which is more than I can say for any other pistol I've owned. I shoots full power factory loads and the weakest possible loads I could come up with equally well.

You complained to them about a gun you didn't own anymore and they didn't call back and, er... offer to fix the gun you didn't own anymore?

O.k., it's not a perfect example of good customer relations, but it's also not entirely shocking.

Most American manufactures (and not just gun makers) churn out inconsistent quality products these days. Lack of quality control is to blame.

Well in regards to your post TheTooner it doesn't matter if I owned it or not I was only trying to let them know of their mistake. Your name suits you... "big mouth"

From my experience, S&W doesn't want to hear from you unless your gun is malfunctioning or in need of inspection for warranty work. I bought a new 617 revolver about a year and a half ago. It is accurate and functions fine but the finish had tooling marks on the frame and pock marks along the underlug of the barrel. I called S&W inquire if their barrels were cast because the pock marks on the underlug looked like some foreign matter or air got in the mold. I was rudely told that S&W tooling marks are part of the manufacturing process and they don't use any cast parts in their firearms so the marks were probably an indication that the wholesaler or store had not correctly stored the revolver. I still have the revolver but my opinion of S&W isn't as high as I was............
