S & W Revolvers: Shooters or Safe Queens?

Over the years I've been fortunate enough to aquire a half decent collection of S & W 14's, 27's, 29's and early hand ejectors. Recently I picked up a nice model 41 in a two barrel set. Yeah, I've had to hawk my underwear a few times and my wife has beat me with a fan belt, but so be it.

I've shot these nice revolvers sporadically as I've always kept the blueing perfect and instead kept to my stainless revolvers and auto's. My question is aside from the clynder ring that always forms on revolvers from regular use, is it possible to keep the blueing pristine if they were taken to the range all the time or would all the shooting, cleaning and handling take the finish off eventually?

Anyone have experience shooting tons of ammo through these nice old revolvers?

It takes some of the finish off not all but so what? They are meant to be shot. I own a Model 15 and a Model 10 that have had tens of thousands of rounds put through them. Pristine they are not but they still look good and I can shoot both of them better than anything else I've owned.

My plan with all my guns both inexpensive and otherwise is to have my heirs say "These guns would have been worth a LOT more if Uncle Claybuster hadn't used them so much." :D

I have S&W 24s, 25s, 27s, 28s, 29s, 57s, 624s, 629s, HEs, TLs, 1917s, registered magnums, S models (pre model numbers), etc. Shoot them all, that's what they're for. In financial terms, in canada, guns are a piss poor investment, so shoot them and enjoy them. - dan

What he said, but I feel so inadequate, I'll only shoot my Model 3s, M&P targets, 13, 25, 27s, 28, 41, 625, HD, .45 HEs, .455 HEs, .44 TL, but probably not my .455 TL....

Having said that, if they are old, but NIB & unfired, I would seriously consider leaving them that way (like my .38 M&P).

Wow, I'm pitching a tent. Thanks for the info guys. I have a 27 50 year anniversary of the .357 that is unfired that I will hang on to. The rest I'll blast the crap out of - they do shoot better than the stainless ones. So far my favorite is the minty 27-1 - smoothest one I got.

even the aniversery gun dosen't command a huge premium if any, you have to find someone who wants it, i'd rather have a plain one:D. but if you have another of the same gun, no sense shooting it, but that wouldn't stop me if I didn't have another the same. They're all made to be shot, go forth and do your best to wear 'em out!

So that's where they all went!

I have a new nickel 27-2 with the original wood presentation box. This is the only gun I do not shoot. I would sell only if someone offer me a preium.

mittycat,

Everyone has to do what feels right to them...but I just don't get full enjoyment out of my guns unless I shoot em' once in awhile. ;)

Best wishes, Jeff.

Hell I have S&W guns that I have never fired, probably never will....2 or 3 of the same model...i just got them because I was itching to buying something and they had this or that that I liked

ah, the joys of being either ridiculously wealthy or single, or both:D

pardon me while I turn green....mind you I do have several N frames, some identical except for barrel length, but that doesn't count does it:runaway:?
