I have four S&W revolvers, two N frames, 629 and 627 V-Comp. and two X frames, 500 S&W and 460V. I'm looking at possibly changing the grips, but am unsure how to tell if I have round butt or square butt frames. All four were purchased new within the last three years.

Can anyone possibly advise how I can tell which frames I have?

They will all be round if in the last 3 years

Thanks for the excellent information, greatly appreciated

Excellent reply post - I'm going to make this a sticky since the info is so good.

Will keep it at the top of the page for easy reference.

Does anyone have a line on some round to square conversion grips for an N frame? Most of the custom places in the states won't ship international, and nobody seem to stock the nice hogue wood grips. Not really really digging the factory hogue rubber grip, too sticky, especially for this big .44.

Ive always ordered straight from Hogue themselves, without any issues.

Me too. Brownells well ship Ahrends grips which are also very nice. If you are willing to pay, check out Nill grips. You can buy direct from Germany or Mactec in us has started shipping to Canada.

hi. i'm a little late in the post, but i know altamont will deliver to canada. only thing is they cannot ship grips with a logo on it. with that said they can custom make anything and send it. they have very nice grips

Alatamont told me "no ship to Canada. I have ordered Ahrends direct from Brownells, when they are in stock.

I just ordered three sets of grips direct from Hogue - two S&W K RB and a set for a CZ Shadow. What I like about the Hogue revolver grips is their "Coke bottle" configuration. S&W used to offer them, but now you pay $300 for a set if you can find them.

Could someone (an existing owner maybe) tell me if the 686 Canadian Edition with 4.25'' long barrel sold around in shops these days is round or square butt? Can't seem to find that info myself so easily..

I don't know how well a RB would work on a 4" or longer barrel gun, but for 3" or less, it seems ideal.

I've got both on my S&Ws and the RB is definitely more concealable for IDPA.

I think all S&W revolvers have come with round butt frames for a few years now; some have square butt-round butt grips to look like the old square frame

S&W offered what collectors call coke bottle stocks for about ten years. They first appeared in 1956 on the NEW 44 Magnum and were phased out beginning in 1966. I think S&W was trying to standardize the type of stocks they made and the "standard" target stock introduced in the early 50s was more than adequate, so they dropped the coke bottle style in favor of it.

If in the Toronto area Williams in Port Perry sells grips for S&W if they don't have them they will order.
I changed from round to square on my TRR8

(BUMP) Round butt/square butt stocks for mine? "I-I gots to know...!"

OK, OK. Last week I was at the gun show, where I picked up a nice pair of Coco grips/stocks for my growing Smitty collection. NIB, the label reads "Ahrends RETRO TARGET STOCKS: S&W N Frame; Round to Square".

I'm confused; I expected them to be a bolt-on conversion, but not so fast....

Looks to me like my (3 yr old) 686 has a 'round frame', and these new stocks have the same external shape as my older (29-2 & 27-2) stocks (square butts).

So here's the thing: These new Cocos don't fit the 29 or the 27, ("N"s) nor do they fit my Model 60 (round butt, "J" frame(?).
My fervent hope is that they will fit the 686 ("L" frame). …

(Dam! How many different stocks do these Smitty revolvers HAVE??) e.g. 1911? Luger? SAA? "one size fits all". But for Smittys??

It's alphabet soup! W-T-F???? :bangHead:

Will these new stocks fit any of my S&Ws??

Ebay has a seller from Thailand that lists round and square grips, custom made, very reasonable prices, worked well for my stuff. I seem to think some of his square grips were designed to fit round butts, too.
