Feeling pretty much lost, i seek assistance from m1a gurus here on the board.
i have a SA M1A 16" Socom, purchased used, and shot flawlessly for the first 200 rounds or so with Portuguese(FNM) ammo. 2 weeks ago while shooting, the extractor blew out of bolt with a shot fired like an empty clip flying off the chamber on M1's:eek: ..nice!...oh well not really. so i brought down the rifle to a local gunsmith, he says all the components (firing pin, bolt, 2 spring detents, and extractor) looks undamaged and voila he puts everything back together using a combo tool. the next day on the range, after about 80 rds, the same thing happened, the extractor in the air. one thing i did notice, the rounds right before these two explosions were both misfires. any feedback would be much appreciated.

This seems to be a fairly common problem with SA commercial bolts. On the forums down south, the standard fix is to replace the cheap, prone to break, cast extractor with a USGI one. The rest of the bolt is fine, it's just the extractor that gives lots of problems :( I don't know for 100% sure, but I believe a M1 Garand extractor will fit just fine as well. Some of the guys on this board may have a replacement for you (i.e. GG&FB). Put an addy in the Equiment Exchange forum :)

RifleDude is right and the M1 Garand Extractor is the same for the M14/M1A/M305 rifles. When the M14 rifle was designed there were a lot of parts that crossed over from the M1 Garand

the SA "cast" bolt out, now TRW is in with assistance from Skullboy.
it will certainly be my first and last m1a
thanks for your kindly feedback.
