Perhaps some one with some M1A experience can weigh in:

One of my Springfield M1As is putting up a fight, the poor thing has clearly sat unused for some time under its previous ownership (it's a rescue, it was morally right to give it a new loving home). I have removed the roll pin and given the guide a firm few smacks using a hammer/woodblock to prevent damage, but it has budged only a fraction of a fraction of a millimeter. My other M1A comes apart with only a firm spanking, as it should, where I fear if I hit this one any harder it will technically be abusive. Should I be using heat or is there another M1A tip or trick I should be looking to?

I have myself a new shiny Blackfeather op-rod guide that is much shinier and shiny. There does appear to be...something...visible on the splines where the guide and barrel meet, perhaps 30 year old locktight?

It has been my expericance that after a op-rod guide is properly "glued" in place, it is destroyed when it is removed....

Snug up the barrel in a vise (preferably with soft jaws) or into a barrel vise. Punch out the roll pin. Then get a large crescent wrench, straddle the guide with the wrench and start twisting....

Once the guide starts to spin, you should be able to tap it off with a hammer and punch.

You will likely deform the guide in the process.

Thanks all, I will give it another crack. I believe in at least attempting to do everything myself, I've already learned a whole bunch, why stop now?
