Can any one suggest if these can be assembled at home? I hunt deer every year here in Southern Ontario where I have to use a shotgun. The factory sabot slug loads are heidiously expensive though. I load top quality hunting loads for my rifoles so it should be possible to do these too.

I don't beven know where to get reloading guides or components though.

ask around with your buddies if they have the Lyman shot gun reloading book
lots of info in there for slug and buck shot loads
some info can be found online at different powder manufactures web sites

slug loads can be either fold crimp or roll crimp depending on data
if you fold crimp you need to mark then so you know a slug is inside

Actually I do have the Lyman Shot shell relaoding guide. I also bought a bunch of Lyman Cast slugs from Cannon's a while back. These work well in a smooth bore shotgum and my friend even killed two deer with them.

Good point about marking them as slug loads too!

What I'm thinking of though is sabot slug loads to shoot through a fully rifled barrel.

have not tried lyman data in a rifled barrel but i have not seen any thing that says not to

if you have the componets slug/ wad you could try to push them down your barrel with a wooden rod

in the IC barrel it only gets tight at the choke but still goes through no problem
mod choke a bit tighter

Use the Lyman Sabot slug mold not the foster slug mold load in a normal AA wad and
with a little tweeking they group 3-4" at 100 yards ....in special dedicated slug guns they can do alot better then that with 1-2" not out of the question!!

Rio star 2 3/4" or challenger slugs are accurate out of smooth bore and rifled barrels they're bout 15 bucks for 10. Is it really worth the trouble to reload for the amount you'd shoot in a year? They r devastating on deer

if you don't count your time / the cost of the lead / cost of the mould / cost of press

25 slugs for 6$ is doable for some one that wants to do lots of range time with a shot gun and want to put lots of lead down range also lighter loads are a possibility

According to Lyman, the 525gr. slug that uses regular shotcups will give "good" accuracy in a smoothbore 12 ga. and even better in a rifled barrel, I know they hit awful hard!

Ballistics Products in the states has just released a sabot that uses 50cal handgun bullets for the 12ga. This is their second try (first try didn't work so good) and I haven't heard much about them yet, but they are available.

I like the Lyman Sabot slug loads. Effective, accurate, cheap to load/ cast.In my fully rifled 870 w/ irons, they are great.I'm using Federal trap hulls, W209 primer,Waa12R wad, 515 gr. (actual weight) softest lead I can get slug fueled by Alliant Blue Dot or SR 4756.

I use almost the same info as Squirrelnuttz but found better results using the waff114 wads with Unique powder. Different guns, different loads. If you'd like, I'll be casting some over the Christmas holidays and go to Milton every couple of weeks. PM me and I'll get some to you so you can try them out. I'll give you the load info, it's very easy to do. The best thing about them is you can get in a LOT of practice VERY cheap.
