I think we all know that some loads perform better in some guns than others with reguards to accuracy, so ignoring accuracy for the moment, which ones are most effective on game (deer specifically). Comments on penetration, expansion and weight retention particularly in non-ideal conditions (ie through the shoulder) would be especially appreciated.

slugs

Hi, through the shoulder I would use the Remington Copper solids and through lung/ heart area it's pretty tough to beat how the Barnes Expanders open up a slice the organs.

Arch:)

But if you had to choose between those two, for ALL conditions, what would you pick? You can't predict what angle of shot you will be seeing (quartering or broadside). I'm trying to find loads that work well in both situations, then pick what is most accurate in my gun from that bunch. If anybody has suggestions that differ from this idea, fire away. I know nothing about slugs and slug guns, and I'm open minded

A big 12 guage slug within shotgun ranges, I think the one that is most accurate would be the key. That is one huge piece of metal and deer are not that tough.

For sabots deffiantly the 3" Remington Copper Solids. I have had the most reliable and controled expantion from them under all condtions plus they shoot real well out of my gun. Winchesters were the worst. Some would expand some wouldn't some would go to peice like a varmint bullet and some would look like they never had been shot.

Thanks guys, I got a bit sidetracked with other stuff and kind of forgot about this thread. Thanks for all your input, I think Rem copper solids are definitely on the list of loads to try. TreX, was it one particular Win load that performed poorly or most Win loads in general? This is the paricular kind of input I was looking for, what loads to avoid, those that expand uncontrolled (excessive meat damage) or not at all. No point testing for accuracy if the end result is not acceptable is my theory. So far the list of what to try is the copper solids and the core loct ultra bonded$$$. Any other recomendations? Any others to avoid?

The only Winchesters I've had an experience personaly were the Golds. My Unlce used to shoot the Platniums though and said the same thing. He was the one that pointed me towards the Remingtons'

Hey Workin. Me and a buddy (I think you know who he is) used to use the winchester partition gold slugs. Our patterns were getting worse by the season. One thing to remember is to use the shooters choice shotgun and choke tube cleaner (or the like of) to get rid of the plastic. I was also explained to me that some guns do not like higher velocity slugs because of not a whole lot of twist before it leaves the barrel. So now we tried the cleaner and the remington copper solids and the grouping tightened up immensly. As far as performance they work well. But then again, any slug that leaves a 50 cal. hole is going to drop.
